I bought a video 30gig ipod online (apple.com). When I got it I installed all the software, put my 8,000songs in itunes and hooked up the ipod. I start transferring songs and the ipod shuts off about every 100 songs and the transfering of songs just starts over. I eject the ipod after about 3 hours and nothing is on it. It just kept randomly freezing and restarting when I would put songs on it.

So i called apple and they said just return it...here's an RMA. I send it in and get a new one about 3 days later. Same problem... so I go downstairs and try it on an old windows 2000 machine. And it works great. It has USB 1.1 so it went extremely slow when uploading songs. But it worked...

But whenever I trying my machine, it just restarts and crashes when uploading songs. I’ve tried all 8 USB-2.0 ports and none will do the job. Any ideas? Is there software on my computer that the ipod doesn’t like? Even when i try to restore the ipod on my machine, it says "firmware error" and doesn’t even restore it. I'm assuming there is some software on my computer that is interfering with the ipod b/c this has happened with 2 different ipods and works great downstairs.

Any ideas?
Thanks...

My specs :

AMD Athlon XP 2500+
1 Gig pc3200 Ram
120 Gig HD
A7N8X Delux MoBo
Windows XP SP2

Thank god I just read about this problem.
The only solution is to get a powered usb 2.0 hub, don't ask questions. ;)

what?? the computer downstairs has a usb1.1 attached to the mobo
and it works fine but slow?

Try using something other than iTunes like Ephpod. See if that helps..

Yeah,
The usb only thing sucks....firewire was teh rox0rs. Basically here is what is happening.

1) Connection
2) Xfer Start
3) USB 2.0 goes fast so it's draining power from the ipod faster than it's delivering.
4) Ipod runs out of juice, but when it restarts, it gets enough juice for non-intense application.
5) USB 1.1 is not going fast enough to require a large power draw from the ipod, basically....because it's taking sooo much longer.

I have the 60GB vidpod and I like it, but I was REALLY pissed to see that I couldn't use firewire, or the old dock from my 30gb. Also the fact that the new ipods dont have power charging stations is a crime.

Mine was a gift....I would have never willingly bought this wif my own money....and I would have returned it...but my name is engraved....sigh....

Power your USB ports is most likely the answer. Its probable that the 1.1's were powered as well. (Mine are). Its also probable that the firmware error is being caused by the firmware not being reflashed because of lack of power. If you power the USB ports, you will most likely be able to do a restore on the firmware and be able to update songs.
