weird sound problems

i usually run firebird/aim/winamp and some other programs on my computer. every once in a while i close them all and open bf1942, but i get no sound. i can close bf1942 and try winamp, and winamp works. if i restart and play bf1942 right after its restarted, it plays fine. then once i close that and try to open it again, the sound doesn't work. i try to open the santa cruz control panel and it says that it can't detect the card. however, winamp still plays. does anyone know how to fix this?
 
So far, what have you tried to fix it?

Right off the top of my head, I would say update your drivers.
