I recently bought an Athlon 2600+ from somebody off of the forums. Supposedly it is multiplier unlocked??? Also, my board sees it as a Duron??? This is very confusing to me to be honest with you. I went to the ASUS site to see if there was a newer bios for my board, but I am running the newest one. (I didn't check on any beta's. I don't know where to find those). My motherboard is an ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe. Does anyone have a clue what is going on? I'm just glad that I didn't pay for this up front. I got him to ship first. I've tried PM'ing him, but I haven't gotten a response yet. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

P.S. I can post the chip markings if that would help anyone.

I know that several of my Athlon XP 1800's have not been auto-detected correctly by ASUS motherboards....that doesn't really help, but your processor probably isnt bad, its jsut the board -- if you go to AMD's website and look up the multiplier/FSB settings for your processor, you should be able to set them manually and be good.

Most boards detect CPU type based upon some very basic properties, including CPU speed. Now, the thing is, on most socket A motherboards there's usually a jumper bank that allows the selection of different FSB settings... Look for said jumper bank and play around with it. I guarentee if you change it (and it exists on your board ;) ) the CPU type will change accordingly.

What does cpu-z say, and/or what does it say on the black sticker? The A7N8X doesn't have jumpers so you have to set from the bios. Unlocked means you can raise the cpu ratio/multi in the bios.

I never got it into windows to run cpu-z. I tried some high multipliers, but they didn't work on my board. When I tried a 12 multiplier, I actually got a multiplier of 6 or so.

The board goes into safe-mode (with a low multi) if it fails to boot at a certain speed. Double check to make sure you're not doing 12*200 or something, try 9*200.

Ok the T-bred 2600+ should be 2083mhz so 10.5*200 should do it. What was written on the cpu?

To be hoenst with you, I've already packed up the CPU and will ship it out tomorrow morning. It was no better than my current one as far as overclocking, and I don't have the time or energy to endlessly try to get it to work. I'm saving up money for my conroe build:)

Well this might be a little after the fact now since you've already packed it but yes it was somewhat common for older BIOS' to report late-model Tbred's and Barton's as Duron's or K7 processors. For instance my BIOS is from Sept 04 while my cpu has a born on date of 0505. wcpuid gives me a name string of K7 processor I believe
