weird problems on my old 2005fpw

So I've been having a few random issues for a while now with my monitor which is an old Dell 2005fpw. I thought they were mostly caused by my old X800Pro card mostly cuz of the fact that some of the problems started after I started using my 40" Samsung LCD as a secondary monitor.

Issues:

1) Bad burn-in of just about any background/game UI after a few hours of use. This I know is could just be because its old and I failed to use sleep mode for a few years. I'm ok with this problem.

2) If I leave both my HDTV and monitor on and they go into sleepmode, the longer they're in sleepmode this worse the flickering madness on my dell monitor becomes when i bring them back on. When I say flicker I mean, when it first comes out of the blackscreen, anything on the desktop is unviewable. It's like the image of my desktop is on a filmreel that starts out superfast then slows down the longer the monitor is on. I wish I could show you guys what I mean. Eventually it stops and it's normal again. This began happening shortly after I starting using my HDTV as a 2nd hookup.

3) This problem ties in with the next one, in which my monitor shows an orange light as if there is no video signal to it, while my HDTV is on just fine. I can restart it using the power button on the monitor over and over, sometimes it fixes it on the first couple tries, sometimes I have to do it upwards of 20 times, till it finally turns green and comes on again.

4) This one happened tonight when I got home and is the reason I am making this thread now. My monitor was completely off when I came home, not even in sleep mode. My HDTV was also off, but I turned that off before I left today. When I tried to turn the monitor on, it came on green, then went off again. It proceeded to do this poweron/poweroff over and over again every 2 seconds. I tried unplugging it and plugging it back in, same thing. I tried unplugging the DVI as well, same thing. I then set my HDTV as my primary monitor but ended up accidentally disabling it. Finally, I unplugged and plugged in my monitor again and it came on, but a crazy sound was coming from it, really high pitched squealing almost for about a minute. Now I'm using it and it's fine.

I know it's time for a new monitor, but does anyone have any ideas as to wtf is happening with this thing? Also, I was wondering if Dell had any sort of tradein program so I could get a newer model at a reduced price or something. I'm about to build a new comp and I was going to wait until later this year to get a 24" but now I'm not sure if this monitor is going to even last that long :(

been a few days and nobody has anything to contribute? Monitor was fine for another day or so but it's now in the neverending power on/off loop again and I can't get it to work now. I'm fine ith it being broken I just want to know wtf is wrong with it.

So I just completely removed UltraMon and all my ATi drivers and installed the new 9.1 Cats.

I was finally able to get the monitor to come back on and it had that flickering thing again, but went away after a minute or so.

Also, the high pitched sound was present, lasting almost 5 minutes and it didn't stop until I went into CCC and configured my HDTV to be my secondary desktop instead of a clone. Literally the moment I applied the setting the sound stopped.

This is all very very strange to me, it seems like it COULD be a driver based problem but the flickering, power on/off, and high pitched sound all seem like they should be coming from hardware issues. Gaaahhhhh I hate not knowing wtf is going on with my hardware.

It sounds like that 2005FPW is getting long in the tooth. When most monitors start to flicker on start or restart after power save, the power supply is starting to go south. That is probably what is contributing to that high pitched sound too.

It's only a matter of time, I am dread to say.I'm assuming it's out of warranty? You can check Dell's web site for a trade up program. I vaguely remember something about it, but not sure if it was Dell U.S. or Dell Canada, and it had something to do with "environmentally friendly" recycling of computer hardware.

Either that or I'm just fantasizing.

I feel bad for ya, 'cause I have one too, and it's a great screen still.
