Weird problem

since this is a really long story i'll try to make it as short as possible.
first i come home from a 3 week vacation, turn on my computer, some stuff starts up except my hard drive. do a bunch of hardware swapping, find out the 5v rail on my powersupply is toast. i RMA it straight to Antec. Run my computer for 2 weeks on a POS powersuply that doesn't have enough power to run all my drives. New powersupply gets here from Antec (380S truepower, same as the RMA'd one cept it has SATA plugs). Plug it in and it doesn't start up. Plug in POS powersuppy again and everything starts up...WTF. plug in new one again and it starts up for like half a second and then does nothing. Plug in old one again and starts up but getting no video and getting a beep code (1 beep around every second). start pulling out ram and video card, nothing helps. plug in new powersupply and clear CMOS, boots up fine. BIOS version seems to have downgraded (i'm not 100% on this, but i beleive i had a higher version). SO i get a new BIOS for my asus a7n8x (nforce2 mobo). Set everything up and boot back into windows, and for some reason it's detecting memory controllers.

The computer now seems to like to reboot randomly and programs crash without errors. Later i run a RAM test and it comes up with no errors. Temeratures are fine. I run virus, spyware, and registry cleaner. no help. Try setting stock cpu speeds, no help. Reinstalled nforce drivers, no help. Run my motherboard monitor overnight and record the voltages and temps. voltages are fine and vary very very little. temps good too. but programs have mysteriously died.

So any ideas on what i can do, or whats broken? i will do a reinstall of windows, but i can't have the downtime right now, so that'll be a couple of weeks off. but if i don't have to reinstall, i don't really want to.
 
That's exactly what I'd try - a reinstall. Other than that I'd probably go with a toasted MB? Odd that it ran fine overnight though...

Downtime sucks.
 
well i finally got some time to do a reinstall and it seemed to be working for a few hours. but now azureus is still crashing once in awhile. not as much as before. shareaza has died on my once so far. how would i be able to tell if it's a bad motherboard? are there any tests for that? and how much can you trust memory testing programs, even if you have it loop through many times, could it still miss something?

It kinda sounds like a memory problem, but you said you tested it.. hmm.. as for the monitoring voltages from OS - it's not very accurate..
 
i believe i've found the problem and i feel pretty dumb for it. i believe one of my ram sticks wasn't seated too well. it's odd that it worked as well as it did for not properly seated ram. hopefully it's fixed now
