I have a rather obscure problem here. I will have to type fast because of it.... So if more information is needed let me know and I can put it here before the ocmputer locks up again! :/


Here is the hardware I am working with

KK266 Mobo
Mushkin pc133
creative 56k modem (unsure of more details than this)
enermax 300w power supply
maxtor 20gb HD (unsure of model right now)

Here is the problem:

Computer Hard locks, the video display goes off (NO VGA INPUT displayed on monitor) I think the computer is "locked" because the number lock and caps lock heys will not turn on and off. It is not the monitor because I have installed a second one with the same results.

In event viewer there is a repeated error that ACPI is writing into some protected space.
I thought the bios might be corrupted somehow so I flashed a new image but this did not cure the problem.

The computer will do this even if I am in the bios changing settings as well. Other weird symptoms: the computer when turned on does not boot up right away. The fans will spin up but there is a "post delay" where it will not boot up. Any ideas?

I was going to try a new power supply. Followed by a new motherboard to see if I can rule out some things. Again I apologize for the lack of detail but this is the only computer I have at home at the moment and I have to type this before it locks again :) Any ideas?

So the computer is still running right?

Have you added any hardware to the machine lately? If not, try a different video card. Something is conflicting with the ACPI, could be faulty hardware, or just a conflict.

Let me know if you've added anything.
 
No new hardware has been added. This computer is about 4 years old, which I built for my parents. The situation is that I came home for winter break and they told me "the computer was acting "weird." So, in short, I do not have a lot of information on when it exactly started happening because I wasn't here. All I can say is what has been given to me in event monitor in windows.

The computer does still run. The problem is that it randomly will give me the aforementioned error messages, hard lock and simulataneously the video goes out. Also... sometimes but not always, if I leave the computer in this state, it may spontaseously reboot and post again. This does not always happen. I don't know if it is a coincidence or not, but this happens more often when it "hard locks" when I am in the bios rather than in windows. Again this could be purely coincidental.

So you think that this could be a faulty video card? Perhaps I should try swapping that out as well before I give up on the mobo.

Here is the message that I am getting from event viewer. Maybe this will spark someone's brain into a possible solution? :)

"AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to read from an illegal IO port address (0xcfc), which lies in the 0xcf8 - 0xcff protected address range. This could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance."

Have you tried replacing the battery on the motherboard itself? Kind of sounds like it isn't retaining the settings you are telling it.
