Weird Problem...

Aight well I just made a new box [see specs below] and the problem I am having is VERY weird. While playing any game (Halo, Freelancer, HL2, WoW) the game will randomly go black. Then my moniter says "Power off in 5 sec" as if there is no signal. A few sec later the game comes back. I continue on and it happens again every like 3min. After about 7 d\c's it goes black and doesnt come back all the way... for instance in WoW I can see my cursor and from what people in game say they can see my chat... but I can't see anything except my cursor. I can alt-tab and my desktop or any windows I have open work fine. And the only way to close the game is to Alt f4 or right click it in the task bar and close it... after doing so my desktop acts very weird... scrolling on webpages and moving windows have the weird jaggedness of not installing video drivers. Also still using the WoW example I try to reload the game and I get a error like this:

OMG UPDATE!

I may be narrowing the problem down... I installed the ATI Control Center and it says the following message after a crash.


VPU Recover has reset your graphics accelerator as it was no longer responding to graphics driver commands

Hope someone can help me figure this problem out!
 
Well I've read somewhere that it might have been related to my motherboard and drivers being outdated... sadly this is not the case as I have now updated not only the drivers on everything BUT Ive updated the BIOS as well... I'm runnin latest catalyst drivers and all of my games are up to date... Even if noone can help me a reply saying "Man that sucks" or "Why dont you try this" would be awesome so I'm not crying alone in the dark with my broken PC //_+
 
Well... more info to hopefully figure something out...

Halo in 'Safe Mode' seems to run fine... ive been playing in safe mode since my last post and no lockups... Video Options for 'Safe Mode' are as follows:

Resolution: 640x480
Refresh Rate: 60hz
Framerate:30FPS
Specular: NO
Shadows: NO
Decals: NO
Particles: OFF
Texture Quality: Medium

This leads me to believe that one of these settings effects the problem... hopefully it isnt something that safe mode turns off but cannot be turned off manualy

Well... now im begingin to think it might be overheating on the video card... cause the video card (X1800XT) is a hand me down from my boss. He put a aftermarket cooler on it (A nice one I thought) and the problem only persists when I up the Resolution in Halo... I'm going to see if lower resolution fixes the problem in WoW and other games.

same problem here but with a x1900xt 256 mb. It only happen on 1600x1200. If I lower the resolution to 1280x1028, there's no problem. I've posted around a few message board to find a solution. If it's my card or the driver or whatever so I can RMA it or fix it what driver tweak or something.
 
I may have fixed the problem... after bringing my comp into work my boss said that it might be caused by the VPU Recovery being turned on. When I asked why it was doing it without ATICCC Installed he said that it is on even without the CCC. After turning it off it seems to be running fine at high resolutions. Try this as well and see if it fixes you.. also if anyone knows a bit more about the CCC and VPU Recovery if they could let me know if I am just hiding the problem and if this will cause damage to my card further down the road, or if this could be a TRUE fix to the problem.

Well it crashed again... but this time instead of reseting it just locked up... Out of curiousity I touched one of the metal parts on the back of my Card and WOW IT HURT! So I am now begingin to think its an overhearting problem... I'm curious as to maybe find a way to test this..

what i did before i even installed the card was put a heatsink on the fets. after installing the card, i put an old AMD fan on the back of the card and when in windows i put the fan to stock 40%.

I Can tell you that I have not had any heat issues at any resolution even after 2 hours straight of gaming
 
Ok I seem to have solved my problem. I went "Digital Panel Properties" in ATI Control panel. Under that go to "Attributes" then go the the DVI setting section and check "Lower DVI frequency on high resolution display" It solved the losing signal problem.
