Weird problem with external drive..

Just put a new rig together. Had a WD USB 2.0/1394 external for a bit over a year, always used the 1394 interface.

It worked just fine after I got the rig up and running, but I plugged it back in today and firewire wouldn't detect the drive at all, and on USB it would detect but not be listed as a hard drive that was usable. It does list it in the device manager, but the name of the drive doesn't appear correctly (sometimes it is symbols, sometimes it is erratically upper and lower case) and I can't actually use it beyond seeing it in Device Manager.

This drive did have this same problem once before on a friend's laptop, but worked fine on the P4 I had at the time before and after that. Is this a sign of a failing external drive or is something set up wrong? Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated enormously as always.

Alright...is there just not a fix for this? People have asked a few times here with no answer, same in a few other forums I've checked. Anybody ever sucessfully fixed this problem?
