weird problem, seems hardware related.

i have just built a spare system. intel BOXG45TY with a conroe 430 cpu. 2gb ram, 60gb hdd, 430w antec earthwatt power supply (overkill i know)

the system run prime95 just fine, temps never hit above 50c. but as soon as i try to play video, i get artifacting on the screen and the whole system freezes.

is there a chance my memory could still be bad even though it primes out ok? otherwise, could the hd4500 chipset be bad? its a new motherboard, and used everything else but all in like new condition... im just stumped on this one, its 100% repeatable every time, just play a video and either 10sec in or 10min in it will lock up the whole system.

of course, all latest win7 drivers from intels website. i have an identical system in my car, same motherboard and it runs peachy. im afraid to swap parts to troubleshoot.. i like things that work.

based on gwarren's suggestion:
compare driver/software versions between the identical working system and the flawed system, see what doesn't line up, make the flawed one match the working one :)

prime95 blend test? try memtest86+ instead for 15 passes. it could be a mobo issue. I agree with g and bob, check the drivers and compare configs.

well, no progress

it just loops at bios p ost, and i have to disconnect power overnight just to get them to fire back up. and its only when i play video. prime95 blend runs great, memtest is fine.. i think ill try a gpu stress test next but i would bet thats fine too.

just to update, this isnt going anywhere. i have tried all i can, it simply hard locks and a loud screeching noise comes from the speakers on any video you try to play. video can be from the harddisk, from a network drive, hulu videos... it doesnt care. if its a video, it will lock up the pc within minutes.

im reinstalling win7, but i have little hope a reformat will work. its gotta be a bad motherboard, and this damn thing is brand new. it works excellent, but it simply will not play video. weird, and completely frustrating. i guess if anything ill throw my 8800gt in there and sell it as 'onboard video not operational'.

Indeed - just RMA it if it is pssobile, as it does sound like the GPU is the problem here.

BTW - the GPU stress test also failed?

i cant find a gpu stress tester that works. this is a 64bit install, so it seems hard to find what i need.

i just reinstalled windows. i let crank 2 high voltage run and left for the grocery store. i forgot to set it to repeat, because when i got back it was just sitting at the desktop. no media player open.

so, i guess it crashed, that or windows update shut it down and the mainboard just fired itself back up (unlikely).

movie is running again though, its been running perfect for 10min now...

edit. froze. it must be a hardware problem. i even cleaned and repasted the video heatsink a few weeks ago.... it totally seems like it builds up heat then crashes... but no heat can be found anywhere.

this board is from an RMA by the way. i had one of these boards that wouldnt boot, sent it back and newegg sent me this one brand new in retail box. i dont want to return it because its already been such a pita.

Do you have a video card to throw in the board just to test it?

not really. my htpc isnt easy to cannibalize off of. i think though ill be buying a 5850 soon (i hope) and ill just put my 8800gt in this when that time comes. until then, ill try a new cpu and harddrive... who knows. all i know is that it is hardware related.... its just not looking good for this motherboard:(

If you can just dig up a pci video card from somehwere.... doesnt even have to be pcie, but just try to find any kind of video card just to test it out. If the video works fine with a different card you know its the onboard video and you can RMA that mobo. Also, you don't have to try a different hard drive just do a DFT on the hard drive you got now. If it tests good its not going to be your hard drive.

EDIT: Acronis is free now for most hard drives now. If you go to the manufacturer's website for maxtor, western digital, and seagate im pretty sure you can get a free download of Acronis for a DFT

ok ill try that. i know i can get the DFT's from the manufacturers. in fact i need hitachis today for a 1tb drive that is failing on me.

but im not done throwing parts around yet. i just put in a brand new e5200, and its obvious to say but its just a little (ALOT) faster now. video playing.... ill know in about 10-20min i guess. remember, hulu vids froze too, and i didnt think those used gpu (not using beta flash 10.1)

edit: froze, restarted. onto DFT and then likely be mad enough to file a second RMA. poor newegg

Well, I've sent an MP3 player back twice for replacements because i did not like the way some of the buttons pressed. Then a 3rd time for a refund. :/

its too late, after 30 days now so newegg wont accept rma.

its ok though, i should have bought a new board but i found a gt220 for $40 after MIR so i said fuck it and ill just do that. it will be a well rounded system with a gt220 and a e5200.

i did do some tests with a gpu stress tester. it fails just like the videos do. sometimes in 3min, sometimes in 13min, but never too long and the whole system locks up with a crazy looking screen (blocky, like video memory is all whacked). its weird, it really acts like an overheating problem.... whatever. it will be disabled and when i sell it to some idiot on craigslist i will magically forget the onboard video is bunk.

Well now, that is baaaad. :/

But why did not you use the 8800GT again?

because its my gaming card in my htpc, and im waiting to score a 5850 for $200. i figure that's around a 3 month wait, and i dont want to be without games for that long....

i dont know, maybe i could send the board to intel themselves... its clearly defective. but it runs prime95 forever, runs memtest86 forever... its just the damn video. when i do sell this nobody will even know, people in my town wouldnt even realize you can take the sidecover off. im only asking $350 for it anyway (complete with 22" samsung and logitech lx7 rf mouse), its a steal compared to whats out there. if i do mention some video problem that's all they will hear and will try to jew me down. i know its bad still.. thats why its going craigslist and not here.

gt220 is installed, works great. i want to keep this, its a perfect little htpc... hard to justify having one just for the bedroom though, especially one this nice. ...... ........ :/

Good news! :D

yeah its a bummer about the onboard video, but its been running video on a loop for like 40 hours straight...

i am dissapointed with the fan noise on this asus card though. i know its a budget card, but for the $70 they retail for i would think the fan would be a lot more quiet, or at least variable (full blow all the time:( )

:S Hmm, well is it a single slot card (EDIT - have not though too much about that, yeah so SS it is)? Have you tried controlling the fan via RivaTuner? I have a 6600GT AGP right now and I can change the RPM just like on the 8800GTX.

i think last time i tried rivatuner was around 1998.... ill look into it yes, ss card with no external power connector either. they all should be passive if ran at stock speed if you ask me....

Well, I dono if passive would cut it, and would not passive be more expensive?

Kind of surprising about RT and you though... a pretty neat program.

what can i say, i like running as many things as i can at stock. only exception is my htpc... that has expensive coolers and high overclocks but thats all about bang for the buck.

youre right, it was a $40 card, and it has full CUDA support. cant complain too much i guess, but if i decide to keep it ill just unplug the onboard fan and ziptie my own 80mm to it. ive done that plenty of times :D
