Weird Problem on Brand New System *stumped*

Just built a brand new system with P4 550 3.4ghz Prescott, Intel BoxD915PBL mobo, 480w Antec ATX PSU, Corsair 512x2 XMS2 DDR2 Ram, and Leadtek Geforce 6600GT PCI-E Vid Card. What happens is that I kept coming back to my computer in the morning and my monitor's power LED would just be flashing with nothing on the screen but the computer will still be on. I figured Windows XP was just set to turn off monitors after a certain time and for some reason my monitors weren't waking back up....this wasn't the case though. It now has happend twice so far when I'm actually on the computer browsing the internet. Both monitors will just go blank and I can't do anything to bring a picture back up. Even restarting the computer won't do the trick most of the time. I have pull the power supply cord or leave the computer off for a few minutes and then power on. Any ideas?
 
slightly off of the target, but i had that happening to a monitor i had put in an install. Basically, after a certain amount of time, the monitor would overheat, i found, and would not give a picture until it was unplugged for a few minutes. by chance are your monitors getting enough airflow (not blocked or in tight space together). I don't imagine you'd have the comp in a room where temperature is unusually warm, but do you? Thats just my two cents.... probably only worth one cent though.
 
good suggestion, but my LCDs are in a well vented area and we keep the temperature in the house at 75F. Also, the LCDs worked flawlessly on my old system. If it was a heat issue I doubt both monitors would blank out at the exact same time anyways. Any other ideas?

I'm thinking it may be either a power supply issue or video card issue since the 6600GT in PCI-E format is a very new card.
 
hmmmm just had a thought. The Intel board has a molex connection on it that is suppose to be for some PCI-E Video Cards that use more than 75 watts. I tried unplugging it and my monitors blanked out instantly as described above. I plugged it back in and all is well. So looks like something is glitchy on the Intel mobo's molex connector for PCI-E video cards.
 
okay, yeah the one i had was a CRT. it wasn't specified in your first post.

anyhoo.. you say you unplug the computer and wait a few minutes. hmm...
i'd say first off you are probably right on the power supply or video card. Antec is a really good brand psu, and at 480 watts your system is probably not starving. and as its happening to both lcd's together, at random times.... my guess would have to go along with the vid card. is there any chance it is overheating? perhaps you have a case fan blowing in the wrong direction, as it is a new setup?

Are there any other vid cards you can substitute to narrow it down to the vid card? or perhaps even a buddy with the same card? if it happens with an identical card, then its not the card. consider the power draw of this card against a different one.

As an afterthought on heat, your power supply isn't overheating i dont imagine. but if it were, it would do so after some time (possibly overnight, or while in use), causing the computer to possibly not output a signal for the monitors to detect?

eh go with the vid card theory. and i'm sure other ppl here have more and better things to suggest to you than i. good luck tho buddy

Unfortunately no one I know has a PCI-E video card that I can test out. I'll probably order another 6600GT and return my Leadtek and pray that it does the trick. It really does seem that it has something to do with the extra molex connection on the motherboard that gives extra juice to the PCI-E video cards. Something must be faulty causing the video card to trip out and cut signal to the monitors. Maybe I'll go with a new mobo and overclock my new Prescott and take that approach instead :)
 
Are you sure that the PC isn't going into Hibernation mode?

Probably not the cause, but worth looking at before RMAing parts.
 
The system isn't going into standby or hibernation. I've even tried hitting the power button again to see if it brings the system back to life, but that's a no go. I might go buy an X700 PCI-E card from Best Buy today and try that out before RMA'ing the 6600GT back to Newegg. The problem hasn't occured today yet so maybe it fixed itself today :rolleyes:.
 
My CRT will do that to if you hit the power cord to the monitor by a mistake. To fix it all i do is make sure nothing is weighing the cord down like other cords, and then i make sure that the cord is angled up high enough and is tightened in enough.

Put the card in a friends comp and it did the same thing. Sending the Leadtek card back and getting a Chaintech 6600GT since it has dual DVI.
