Weird noises coming from full load OC

i noticed that when i put my OC'd q6600 under full load (prime95/IBT) i can hear this noise thats pretty loud, sounds like a tea kettle when its done, or like a snake hiss lol. this noise goes off throughout the time im stressing the cpu.

i seriously dont know what this is! all i know is that it wasnt happening before i OC'd and that it ISNT the HD and that its isolated to something on the motherboard (ie. cpu, nb, sb etc)

has anyone heard of this before or know what it is? specs in sig.
 
It's your capacitors in your power supply most likely. Very common.
Check to see that your not overloading your power supply.

you think? well its 380 watt antec earthwatts (80+ effiecient), with no graphics card so thats a load off the psu, but i am running at 3.4ghz lol.

how could i tell if im overloading the psu without measuring at the wall?

if it isnt the psu what else could it be? how about the capictors on the mobo?
 
It's not capacitors, it's coil whine. Although it is pretty common, like Razor said. You're definitely not overloading your PSU, but it does happen sometimes when PSUs that have loose coils are placed under load. The only thing you can really do about it is RMA it for a unit that doesn't suffer from the problem. You'll probably be happy to know that it has no impact on the performance or reliability of the PSU, though.

ill look into RMA'ing it, and maybe upgrading, but it is kind of annoying and the psu turned off on me a few times today, forgot to mention that :rolleyes:, as soon as i cold started it started up and the power went out on it, but right after it turned on fine, this was without OC btw.
 
I have the whine, except it's on my mobo when the fan speeds are turned down. weird stuff

ill have to check tomorrow if its the mobo or psu, i heard of capacitors on the mobo also making noise.

ill remove psu and test separately, ill update tomorrow, thanks for the help guys
 
The squirrel's are screaming, feed them! :)

If you find out what's making noise on the mobo you can coat it with clear nail polish. That might quiet it down a bit.
 
if its coils a dab of hot glue will usually fix it its not worth wasting your time RMA for something that might happen on the new board and is otherwise working.

Fan whine with fans turned down is the fan motors themselves protesting at the PWM pulses of the motor controller.(electrical part of motors are coils as well BTW if you care) you could try a resistor on the fan and turn the speed back up.
 
alright pretty sure i isolated the problem, i grabbed a long vacuum hose tube (i know gross) and put my ear next to it, when i heard the noise, and it seems to be coming from the mobo around the socket, im assuming its one of the little capacitors under the HSF brackets.

guess ill have to RMA the board, and finally get rid of it.

thanks for your help guys, and i did make sure it wasnt the fans by putting resistors on them, thanks for the suggestion.
 
i've had caps whine on my mobo From MSI and Asus..

wasn't a crazy overclock but for 939's, it was decent. from 2.2 to 2.8GHz.

did you get them replaced? im trying to contact GB support right now, but their site is so horribly laid out, its really loud on this mobo, sounds like something is burning like a sizzling sound
 
I've had the same problem on an Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe and an EVGA 680I. I was able to RMA them both without problems.

just talked to a GB rep and he said i can RMA it, thanks for the help guys, was about to RMA my psu too.
