Weird Noise

My computer is making a weird humming noise. And the hum changes pitch so it doesn't always sound the same. I suspect it's my video card because I remember I had to return this one two weeks after I got it when I originally bought it over a year ago. My question is basically, could it be my hard drive? I was under the impression that a hard drive error would have a constant noise, not a changing noise. Also, should I go and buy a new video card because I honestly have no idea why it would be making a noise?

The components that can make noise to my knowledge are the Harddrive, Videocard(the moving components for the fan), Power Supply, and the monitor. I would remove the panel on the side of your case(if that is it's configuration) while it's running and seeing if you can't pinpoint the source. Whatever piece of hardware it is I would replace, unless it's the videocard fan and if the card doesn't have any heating issues, in that case it wouldn't be critical but you may want to replace it just in case.

I just pinpointed it to my videocard fan which still seems to be spinning, just making noise while doing so. The card does not seem to be hotter than it should be either. Is it possible to replace the fan/heatsink on an Asus 9600XT or somehow make the noise go away!

Yes, it is possible. However, I'm not particularily familiar with the 9600XT so I can't give specific instructions.

However, this site (http://www.silentpcreview.com/Sections+index-req-printpage-artid-197.html) has instructions on how to add a Arctic Cooling setup to a 9600XT. As part of the setup, they describe how to uninstall the heatsink. Hope that helps! :)

edit: Just make sure you put a new one on after taking the old one off! Goes without saying, I guess. ;)
