Weird noise coming from 9800XT

My 9800XT have been running fine for almost a year now, but when I turned on my comp today, I realized that the sound it was making from then fan was unusually loud. Opened up the case and everything seemed fine, except that the fan do seem to be running kind of slow. The sound it's making doesn't really sound normal, it's not screeching or anything, it's just a really annoying noise and it does not sound like what a normal, loud, fan would usually sound like. The card is running, it's just the noise that's bothering me. Does anyone know what I can do solve this problem other than getting an aftermarket cooler since I'm running a shuttle here, so space is very limited. Thanks.

the fans might be going bad if you dont want to put a new one on it then just chek to see if it keeps working as it want suck if that fan died and killed your card

If the fan died, then his card wouldn't be killed immediately, I think. It would 1) overheat 2) start artifacting/freeze up. As long as the heatsink is on I do not think it will "die." But of course, your shortening its lifespan and if you see your fan not running as fast as normal, then the card is running hotter- and then its downhill from there.

get a new fan or a new case?

It wouldn't die right away. But I bet it would be died in matter of hours.

Na,...probably the owner would notice because of the artifacting, and freezeups and shut off the computer...

If he was exeriencing graphical glitches, I'm sure he would have mentioned them.
If the fan is still blowing some air across the heatsink the gpu might never overheat, especially if he isn't overclocking the card.

The fan is bad, but it could go on for months like that. Plan on replacing the fan. The sooner the better.

you could try lubing the fan but i would recommend getting a vantec iceberq4 video cooler ($15). it would fit nicely and would be a step up from the stock hsf plus thats what i use on my xt in my shuttle machine anyhow.

wasnt this on the front page?? some guy's video fan decided to become "fanless" and the card fried, but ati was kind enough to replace it. it wouldnt die immediately i dont think, but it will die nevertheless and if the fan decides to stop spinning i dont think youll be able to notice it until some permanent damage did occur.

Thanks for the replies, I was reading around the forums and it seems like that lubing the bearing on the fan might fix the problem. But I'm afraid that it might be only a temporary solution, so I guess I'll be looking for a new fan that will fit in a shuttle, For the vantec iceberg, I'll have to remove the entire heatsink on my vid card right, and isnt the iceberg only for the nvidia series of card?

The other strange thing that's been happening is when it first started happening the other day, I opened up the case and just spun the fan a little with my hand. Then when I turned on my comp, the noise went away. Just then though, the sound came back and I did the exact same thing again, and once again, the noise went away. Is this a sign that it'll be only a matter of time before it dies completely?

Edit: Problems fixed, just needed a little bit of lithium grease :).
