I set up a few computers and a network for a customer of where I work, and when I left everything was working. Today he calls and I go down to find that his office computer is no longer on or seeing the network. Quick ipconfig /all show's a 169 IP which if im correct is default window's ip for when it cannot find one. I try a release / renew and it tells me it cannot renew because it cannot find anything to renew from.

A quick look of the network settings show that everything is correct and duplicate to his other computers. I tried to change the lan setting to have it auto detect proxy, didnt work.

Next I tried the windows connection / network wizerd's to no avail.

It cannot ping any internet site, nor anything on the network, yet it pings 127.0.0.1 just fine.

I thought about uninstalling TCP/IP but that option was greyed out, I was logged into the computer as an administrator at the time and thought that it would let me remove the protocol.

Im completely at a loss on this one, any suggestions and help would be most welcome!

Thanks!

Yeah, reset modem and router, unplugged and replugged cat 5's, rechecked my crimps and everything checked out.

uninstall the tcp/ip service and reinstall it.

XP: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=299357

2000: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;285034

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=811259

also try doing an ipconfig /flushdns and ipconfig /release. Then disconnect it so it does not pick up another address via DHCP, or if it is static, change it to auto-discovery and then release the IP.

I don't think the tcp/ip stack is corrupted because you can ping the loopback, but it might help if it is reinstalled.

Try using a different cable, could be the cable is bad, or the end on it is bad.

Thanks for the quick reply,

DVAmon: Saved me some time looking around MS.com... From those sites it looks like the winsock is corrupted.

Never reinstalled TCP/IP through XP, learned today that you cant uninstall it like in 2k / 9X systems.

When I set up this guys network I had the same issue with a different machine of his, but it was such a messed up machine I talked him into a format. I hope that it doesnt come to that on such a relatively new system.

I will try the things you have suggested, hope they dont proove to difficult but thank you very much for the information and help! Very interesting and wonderfull problem.
