Weird High Idle Conundrum: e6400 & Big Typhoon

What's going on? I idle at 41-42 (which seems high) but my cooling is very good, under load I don't even hit 50, gets to 49. This is really a narrow range, but I'd expect my idle to be lower. NO matter how many times I've reseated this config it's the same. I can't get my idle under 41!

Case probably has good negative air flow (2 antec fans on low in front and 120mm fan in back on medium). I've got an active coolermaster fan on my (passive NB chip).

I'm getting a powerful Silen-X 120 mm fan in a few days...two questions:

1. should I put this new 120 on the big typhoon or use it on high to create even more negative pressure in case.

2. should I put the active cooling fan on the NB or SB chip?

Thanks!!

Overclocking and/or increasing the core voltage causes the P5B-Deluxe to partially disable EIST. It'll clock down but won't decrease the voltage, so the CPU even at idle and at a 6X multipler will still consume some power.

I've got basically the same situation with my E6600 and CNPS9500. It's surprising, but 40-50 is not a dangerous temp range. A bit disappointing, yeah, but no big deal to me. I'm OCed to 3GHz and I've never gotten below 40 or above 50, so it's cool.

In all honesty, the idle temps don't matter that much. It's the Load temps that count. From what I see, you're load temps are pretty good. As long as you're not idling above 50C, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

you using the auto fan speed controller on the mobo?
maybe thats why you dont go under 40 cuz its slows the fan down..............

do you have a nice thin layer of thermal compound? also have you given it some burn in time as some times your temps lower once it has time to get good and warm a few times

Thanks guys, I put a coolermaster fan on my SB at least those temps are 35 now. just redid my cpu for the thousandth time and burning it in now...reaching about 51-54 @ load on a brand new application, so that should take it to about 50-52 after it's burned in good.

I think part of the problem may be my PS...it's real hot and there is no fan inside it blowing the hot air out back. I'm seriously considering getting another PS with a fan sucking air in and out the back, this fan just sucks air in from the bottom and that's it, it has to dissipate without the help of a fan.

that's the only explanation I have as my system should run alot cooler than it does...my plans have gone awry, I was really hoping for a cool system this time around.

I'm also considering water cooling just cause I'm so pissed! :)

i read all the temp thread, about 5pages or so, and it seems to me 40C idle and 50-60C load is more comon than you think

Yep agree with you , put this in your spliff and smoke this

 check temps , on load

Idle
, Your IHS must be a bit warped to but lapping that will void your warranty

Oh yes, and OC'ing it won't?

The only difference is plausible deniability.

You will get away with overclocking cos they have to check it but the lapping is straight no go area.
