Hi, whenever I turn off my computer, my PSU begines to make a hi pitched squealing sound and it doesn't stop until it is turned off through its power switch. However, when I turn my computer it stops. I have an Antec Smart Power-500 and I cannot find out what the problem is. Can anyone Please diagnose my problem because I have no clue :p

Thanks In Advance

It stops when you phyically rotate your computer to face a different direction???

If the pitch changes while the load changes, it's just the windings of a transformer inside the PSU singing. Harmless (other than mentally.)

If the pitch remains constant, there may be a coil leaning up against something, like the inside of the PSU housing. Again, harmless.

If the whine has any kind of an "airy" sound to it, like air escaping through a tiny hole, see if you can see the tops of the caps in the PSU. Make sure the tops are flat and not buldging because they're venting.

Agh sry the noise is only there when the computer is turned off, when it is on, the noise is gone. The only way i can stop it is to turn off the PSU via the little switch in the back. When I turn it back on before I boot the computer, the noise comes back and I can't sleep without physically shutting off the PSU after I perform windows shutdown on my computer. So should It sounds almost like a fan and its driving me nuts. :p

Only when it's off?

SmartPower isn't active PFC, so it could either be a filter choke coil right on top of where the AC input is (not a big deal) or one of your input caps venting (big deal.)

Either way, if it's under warranty RMA it. If it's not under warranty, open it up and inspect your caps WITHOUT touching them (as they can hold a charge for a while.)

I think it's the smaller transformer for the +5Vstandby rail, and if it's not a new PSU, maybe the capacitor it drives has gone bad (after unplugging the AC cord for 20-30 minutes, look around where the purple wire on the circuit board).

Is there any way to quiet down a transformer if wedging cardboard or toothpick doesn't work?

thx for the replies. Gonna check it out and its still under RMA so i guess i'll take that route.

Thx

hey

i just bought an antec smartpower 500W and i have a high pitched buzzing from my

mine is only noticeable (with case on and everything) when in a high draw app (atitool 3Dview does it great), and the pitch gets higher and louder when i increase the OC (ie, increase power draw. does that mean it's the transforming windings? is there any way to stop that? it's driving me crazy!!

Ive had many switchmode powersupplies make that god-awfull squealing when I turn them off. Some do it normally when on under a heavy load, but I cant rememeber what the deal was with one I had that I fixed. Had something to do with the protection circuit (or not).
