Weird heat problem....

Ok guys, bear with me as its been a few since Ive really tried to keep up with PC's and what not, about 2 years ago I built the following:

Intel i7 920
MSI Eclipse mobo
BFGTech GTX295
3GB of Gskill ram
1kw Corsair PSU
Coolermaster Cosmo Case
3 TB's
And one of those big orange Zalman coolers

Anyways, when I built this machine, I played like ~6hours of Crysis full tilt @ 1080p without issues. It could really play anything for any period of time and be fine. Lately if I jump into a game of CSS, like 15min in the fans kick on 75%, I mean, Im sure my machine is outdated for "todays standards" but when did CSS ever stress this system?

Onto the breaking point, last night my internet decided it didnt want to work, so while I was waiting for it to come on, I opened HL2 to see how long itd take me to beat it, played for ~45min, noticed the fans were on 100%, didnt think anything of it, playing another 10min and bam, game locked up, lost video signal.

I popped the side of the case open to find the litle green LED light on my video card was now red, and the cooling fins where to the point you would get burnt if you touched them, all the fans were still working, not one fan wasnt spinning.

Any ideas? Im kinda embarrassed Half Life 2 just whooped my machines ass. Thanks guys.

I thought about tearing the machine and card apart and putting new thermal paste on everything, considering BFGTech isnt even in business anymore and I couldnt get my card warrantied if I needed to.
 
I am assuming you cleaned all the dust filters and blew the dust bunnies out with canned air? Simply sound to me like you need to do a thorough dusting off of the machine. Make sure all your intake fans are working also, my machine did something similar and I cleaned it all out, it wasn't until I fired it back up after the cleaning that I noticed my intake fans weren't working.

+1 to this, it sounds like the the 285 has a lot of dust and needs to be cleaned out. I would suggest that you take it out of the machine, blow the machine out with canned air then do the same with the gpu. Then install hardware monitor and monitor all your temps.
 
If this doesn't work it sounds like your gpu is over heating so take off the cooling units, reseat with new thermal paste and just for kicks do the same to your north bridge, south bridge and cpu if the gpu reseating doesn't work.

The north bridge controls the gpu generally so I would go gpu -> north bridge -> cpu -> south bridge if you want to be lazy about it and take it logically step by step.
