just bought a 2TB WDC WD20EARS-00MVWB0 for storing all my stuff into. Whenever i try to transfer data from my seagate 7200.11 500gb (ST3500320AS) drive, my computer freezes, and becomes unresponsive. The only solution being to do a hard reset.

SMART is reporting no problems. and to solve it i've even been doing a write zeros format on the drive for the past 20 hours, which seems to be increasing in time the longer it goes on instead of decreasing (188 hours to go as of this moment).

Other bugs with the drive? slow write speeds, like SUB 10MB/s sometimes as low as 2MBs.

kinda out of ideas on what to do, if it doesnt work im thinking of returning the drive and getting something else....

http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1419738 (thinking of increasing my SB voltage as recommended here)

also i've tried to transfer to it on stock settings as well and the same thing occoured, frozen computer after a slow transfer speed

Are you looking at the raw smart values for
Reallocated Sectors Count
Offline Uncorrectable
Current Pending Sector Count
and
UltraDMA CRC Error Count

Or just the SMART pass/fail. If the later install a program like CrystalDiskInfo and see what it says. SMART pass / fail is in my experience very useless meaning it only tells you a drive is bad after it is very very bad or totally stops working.

Freezings very often indicate that drive is going bad (even brand new one)..

heh sorry forgot to update this thread.

The problem was with my rail.

I was powering 4 drives with 1 rail and an ssd and optical drive with the other.

I re-arranged them so it evens up the load, and voila, problem solved.

Thanks for the advice!
