weird comparison but...

how about SLI 2x 8800GT (current setup) vs 4800 or 5800 (no SLI/xfire, can't afford that)?

How far apart are they? worth upgrading?

Well, you'd have to look at the 8800GTs as a 9800GX2 to get some good benchmarks.

That said, I'm not sure if there are any direct comparisons between the GX2 and the 4800 series.......except here:http://www.guru3d.com/article/vga-charts-december-2008/4

In the 2008 reviews,the GX2 and the 4870 512 are pretty close, in FEAR....
The GX2 wins in Crysis.....

sadly this is 2008 data and games.

I would guess the 5870 would best the 8800GT SLi in nearly any game you choose, but by how much would be determined by a bunch of factors.

if you are not going to use a sig then ALWAYS list your specs when asking questions like this. your cpu, psu and resolution all have an impact on what gpu setup you should go with.

8800GTX in SLI are roughly comparable to a single GTX 285, which is roughly equal to a 4890. The 8800GT is a notch slower than the 8800GTX, but the 8800GT in SLI is a bit faster than a single GTX 260. The GTX 260 is roughly equal to the 4870 1GB and the 5770. Therefore, 8800GT SLI performance falls somewhere between 4870/5770 and 4890 performance.

In my opinion, it wouldn't be worth upgrading 8800GT SLI to either 5770 or 4890; that would be either a minor downgrade or a minor upgrade. Wait until prices fall on the 5850 to $250 or less, or for Nvidia to release Fermi to get a significant upgrade.

As another has said your setup is close to a 285. Keeping that in mind a 5770 is roughly equivalent in most benchmarks with a gtx260. So as long as you get a 5850 or above you should have a net positive in graphics power.

At what res? The 512mb limitation of your 8800s is going to be a big issue in some games at 1920x1080. I went directly from a pair of 8800GT in SLI to a single 5850 @ 1920x1080, the difference, especially in minimum framerates and ultra high texture capabilities was night and day. It was well worth the upgrade at the $259 I paid. Overall a much smoother setup.

In my experience, my dual EVGA GeForce 9800GT 512mb SuperClocked cards weren't even comparable to my single EVGA GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 (896-P3-1255-AR). And the GTX 260 Core 216 didn't really compare well to the Sapphire Radeon HD 4890 1GB Vapor-X my friend bought.

I'd go with a single Radeon HD 5xxx series before I would stick to the GeForce 8xxx/9xxx series cards any day. At least with the Rad5k you're getting DX11 for more potential future-proofing =D

putting together a build right now.. and will have a thread of detail build and OC ;).. still in OCing process.

sounds like keeping it for a while is a good idea.. $300 is a lot of bucks.

although not entirely the same, my newly setup SLI of x2 9800GTX+'s is proving to be well worth the $200 dollars i paid for both cards. IMO the best bang for your buck when it performs at the same level of a gtx 285 with a price tag of $380. I'd say go with a second 9800 gt, you'll be paying a lot less but your performance will be roughly the same as the single GPU upgrade. I ran a 3dMarks06 and got a 22244 overall score. you can see my full setup in my sig, but that score puts it around just above a 285 and a 4890.

Yes, but as previously stated, you have to consider the resolution at which he plans on using them.

Not only that, consider the DX factor. The 5 series brings Direct X 11 to the table.

I'm running them at 1920x1200 and they're awesome. Unless he's running a 30" setup i think he'll be ok, even then you'll be able to run games with decent quality.

one side note: a 4890 or 5770 will use less power than the pair of 8800's, but thats about it (and no, I'm not saying change for that, just a side note, it really doesn't matter much)

so it brings nothing to the table is what you're saying...

GTX 285 by itself can handle *most* games from 2008 and 2009 into a 30" at native res, but maybe not full max settings, it works
