Weird Acrylic Case problem

Hey all, I purchased an acrylic case for a friend and built it up. Everythings running fine but theres a weird issue with the amount and type of noise being generated from the case. From the fans that are pulling air in through the slats on the case, there is a loud hum, a very rhythmic or cyclic kind of high frequency sound..very odd. You can hear it from across the house, but when you're right next to it and sitting there for a while you actually get so used to it it's not that annoying. The fan on the back of the machine exhausts air through an open hole, no slats covering the hole, and the sound isn't heard there. If you cover up the front hole, probably 80% of the sound goes away, and the two intakes on the side panel when covered up account for the rest.

Could this be caused by the slats covering the fan holes? It's your run-of-the-mill acrylic case, I'd hate to have to cut those out but the sound is so annoying (to his wife hehe) that it's just going to have to be fixed.

Here's a picture of the case so you can see what I mean when I say 'slats'. They're like cut out grills..hard to explain but look at the pic and you'll see what I mean.

Any help would be appreciated !

same deal with my dads acrylic case. when i had one i dremel'd them all out, when these cases first came out they were already precut 80mm fan wholes, no restriction. no idea why they changed.

if you have a sound that is getting louder then softer and so on it could be 2 things.

the resonant frequency of part of the case is close to the frequency of that the fan is making.

you might get rid of it by slowing the fan down a tiny amount. or swapping it for a slightly faster or slower one. or even just decoupling it with foam or grommets.

if you have 2 fans which are spinning at speed very close to each other you could get a beat frequency (which is a sound at the frequency equal to the difference between the other 2 sounds)

cutting out the holes and using something to isolate them a bit from the case itself wouldent hurt... would improve airflow, and keep your fans nice and quiet
