Acomdata external usb/esata hard drive suddenly stops being recognized by windows, front status light blinks red and blue, and there's a faint clicking noise.

hdd inside is a WD Green 1TB.

removed the hdd, hooked up to internal sata and power. Hdd runs fine, no clicking.

I test the enclosure by hooking up a dvd burner to it, put a dvd in the drive, and the acomdata enclosure works fine for this purpose.

Any thoughts why the hdd does not work with the enclosure, but the dvd burner does?

Most failures with an external HDD are the enclosure. And a DVD drive isn't likely drawing the same amount of power as a HDD.

You've tested the HDD and it works, so get a new enclosure and move on.
