Wow, this is weird. I have an ATI 7970 that has been in my case for the better part of a year. I have been running it with no problems.
When I got up today, I noticed that, every once in a while the fan would run up high for a few minutes and then go back down. I check the Performance tab of CCC and watched as occasionally, the activity meter would max out, the temps would start to rise and the fan would start to run up. This would last maybe 5-10 seconds and then quit.
I checked Process Explorer to see if some odd DLL was somehow affecting the GPU but see nothing running when the activity meter maxes out.
I uninstalled everything AMD related, ran a driver cleaner, and reinstalled the latest beta drivers, etc. No difference.
While I have 4 monitors plugged in, only one is enabled and, when the GPU usage is normal (near zero at the desktop) the GPU clocks are all low. (300/150). Of course, they max when the usage spike happens. Everything is running at stock clocks right now.
I installed Afterburner and set up a custom clock and the same thing is happening so something must be stressing the GPU every once in a while. How do I troubleshoot this?
PS. I just noticed that, even when I set the fan to manually run at a certain speed, it will run up when the temps start to climb. Is that normal?
