Hi folks,

I've heard some people mention that week 27 chips are better or more overclockable than chips produced in other weeks.

I'm building my new system now (only thing left to buy is the RAM) and my e6300 has this printed on the box: L627A498.

If I'm reading that correctly, it means I have a week 27 one, no? If so, is it going to make a difference to me, not being an extreme overclocker? (I'll be happy to get to 3 Ghz) I had thought that usually it was the memory and the fsb that were limiting factors, but this is my first build so I really don't know what I'm talking about, most likely.

At any rate, a short explanation as to what the fuss is about would be appreciated.

fwiw, I'll be using the e6300 & stock cooler, 965P-DS3 mobo and probably Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800 (2x1 Gigs).

Thanks!

I too have an E6300 L627 A498 CPU, and using my DS3 motherboard im @ 3.22GHz @ 1.400Vcore. This chip likes alot of FSB, and so does the motherboard. Good choice on picking out your parts.... ;)

Dunno about week 27 being the best, it varies. If you get lucky then yours will be good, but its just the luck of the draw. My 6400 is week 27 but i dunno if its the best. I got it at 3.2ghz at 1.3875 vcore. ram is at 1.9. i forgot the other specs since I am not at home. But I like it since I have downed the volts on the vcore,nb,ram and she still is stable. not 24/7 but 8 hour stable so far. :D idle is at ~32C and when stressed is around ~51C (according to coretemp)

Thanks for the reply!

By the way, what does LAPPED mean, in your sig?
lapped is when you take 400/600/1500 grit sand paper to the top of the CPU and "SAND" it till 100% flat

and do it to your HSF as-well. The CPU turns out to have a copper IHS on it, and I know this cause as soon as it was "FLAT" I had an all copper surface :D

I've been overclocking every generation of chips since the 486.

I read every time about how a particular week is better for o/c'ing on X chip.

My experience shows only luck of the draw WITHIN a given spec revision.

Revisions do have a significant difference in chip o/cability.

However, that being said, we are all using the same Rev Conroes at the moment, and this spec is doing pretty f-ing good across all weeks; ie. don't sweat the week.

Cheers,

Production week doesn't really matter for 6300s, 6400s, 6700s, and 6800s. It definitely matters for 6600s.

Definite is a strong word. Have a look at the week numbers for e6600s in our database.
It's a scatterplot ie. no correlation.

I concur that for the E6600's, week 27's are very good. In my experience.

My week 23 did 3.2GHz @ 4.55VCore 24hr Orthos stable on air.
My current week 27 does 3.6GHz @ 4.55VCore 24hr Orthos stable on air.

400MHz difference! Granted this is not set in stone. YMMV.

BUT, I have seen many folks with earlier (week 23's) stuck at 3.2GHz on air with realistic VCore. I love my week 27 and won't give it up for anything.

Again, this is for the E6600's! I do not think there is the same week results with the different procs.

i used to have a week 23 e6300 that can only do 450fsb max. now i have a week 27 and i can do 485fsb and still climbing..

Well I got Week 26, same ram and mobo like yours but with big typhoon running 100%.
Core temp temperature is about 53-55 with room temp about 25 (AC on), if airconditioning is off, its about 56-58.

I got up too, 473fsb (3.3ghz), 1.35625 CPU volt, +0.2 dimm, +0.1 FSB and MCH F5 Bios.
It's rock stable. wont' post above 485mhz but when flashed to F6 it will enter windows at 490 and run Orthos for a few minutes before locking up might be stable if I tweaked the voltage.

Don't forget to put 4cm fan on the NB HS.

You might want a better CPU HS if you want some low temp.

Good luck and don't forget to report :D

oh by the way, isn't newer week processor supposed to be better since they are better produced ?

Not necessarily by week, no. By revision yes, week no. Newer (>=week 26) e6600s are less aggressively binned. So in the beginning they used all of the good 4MB chips for 6800s and 6700s, leaving the 6600s pretty crappy. As time goes by, they built up a backlog of the more expensive chips and started binning some of the better silicon for 6600s. That doesn't man that there aren't some amazing week 23 6600s out there, just that they're much rarer than week 27 ones.
