Webcam: Imaging and Scanners default storage?

I have asked this question before, but through my own experimentation, I'm not certain if I was given the correct answers.

I *had* a Quickcam Messenger, and had taken some pictures with it using the Imaing and Scanners wizard built into Windows XP... it shows up when you double click the webcam in My Computer. If you take stills using the wizard, they show up in a pane right below the streamed video feed. When you remove the camera, it seems as if you lose access to the previously taken pictures, which is what I want access to.

In the last thread, I was told that the webcam had memory in it, and that the pictures were stored on the actual webcam. News to me that any webcam actually had some sorta flash ram in it for still storage.

Regardless, if I take pictures with a camera that I do have now, and then unplug it and plug it into another computer, the previously taken pictures are not displayed, leading me to believe there must be some sort of cache on the computer where you can get at the images previously taken.

To further support this, pictures that I had taken over two months ago showed up in the preview pane when I plugged the camera in again. If you right-click on the file names in the preview pane, they do not have a path, so I have no way to track them down. I have a sneaking suspicion that the pictures that I want to get at will show up if I plug in any Quickcam Messenger, but I'm not really wanting to have to buy one in order to get a small assortment of misc. pics.

Is anyone aware of what the real situation is? Do webcams REALLY have some sort of flash ram in them? Is there a secret cache file somewhere on my HDD that holds the pictures?

Help?
