Web Development Machines

I am currently developing .NET web applications from a machine w/ these specs:

512 ram
P 3, 850 mHz
2x 20GB HD
TNT2 Graphics card

I am sick of waiting 5 minutes per compile on such small sites, so our department is going to have to make a proposal to the ppl who pay the bills to buy new machines. We are a small business(15 or so employees), but the web dept (3 employees) is an integral part of the business. Going with the top of the line machines may not be super realistic, so i am wondering what all other developers are using for machines, and what other developers would go with if they were in this situation.
Oh, and our primary development environment consists of VS.NET 2003, Photoshop 7.0, and a bit of the Studio MX Suite.
Thanks.

if you don't get a whole new machine, upgrade the one you have

at my previous job, i couldn't get the cash for a whole new computer, but they were more than happy to give me $$ for ram and a new hard drive

upgrade that machine to 1.5GB ram and the fastest P3 that'll fit, and you'll cut your compile time significantly

Problem is that the ram is maxed out on this machine at 512. Heh, its an old compaq

ewww... compaq :D

in that case, suggest that they buy you a $400 dell... there seems to be a few good deals on dells right now...

and trust me, you can't just ask people who only use word for a new pc... they just don't get it, and they automatically think $2000... but if you show them a few low priced options, they're more likely to see it your way

Dell has this $500 comp (after $100 rebate) that comes with a P4 2.53 Northwood B, although it only has 256 MB RAM.

checkout fatwallet.com, slickdeals.net, and techbargains.com

you can get a cheap dell 400SC which you can upgrade the snot out of (well tons of upgradeability) for cheap around 200-275 after instant and mail in rebates. (got mine for 197 after 100 rebate)

uses 875 intel chipset an oem Intel board
can take ECC or non ECC DDR pc3200

Buy yourself some cheap or used ram, slap a p4b or p4c in there and you have a great system.

We usually order from dell, we are on a government contract and get a substantial discount.

Get the fastest P4 you can afford with 1 gig on memory. Memory and cpu speed are really all that matter.

I personally do alot of .NET myself, and my machine does the job pretty nicely.

P4 2.6C
1GB DDR2700
MAX3

While you don't have to go with a top of the line motherboard, I would recommend the P4 2.6C.

I hate to say Dell, but Dell might be the way to go.
