Alright all, I've Googled, searched, and tested a bunch of stuff, but I've come up disappointed for the most part. I was a long time Jukefly user (www.jukefly.com), but it looks like they were purchased, and a short time after the agent/software started to go south, to the point it's no longer usable. Since then, I've tried:

Winamp Remote
WMV Remote
Kplaylist
maestro.fm (currently in use)

Now maestro works, but they upload every song I play to some Amazon storage they have...which really, really, really bugs me. The others just didn't work out for various reasons.

So, here's the deal. I need something web based that can play through a browser, is responsive, and can handle roughly 45,000 songs. If anyone knows of software that will handle this, let me know please.

Also interested in a solution as well, as I tried Winamp Remote and eventually was disappointed.

You might want to try HomePipe. It's similar to Dropbox, but I believe its more robust and you can play audio/video/photo content in the browser.

Maybe audiogalaxy? I use it to stream my entire mp3 collection (about 45K tracks) to my iphone http://www.audiogalaxy.com/ You have to install software on your local PC, but then you can access it from the audiogalaxy website or via a smartphone app

Windows 7 allows you to use WMP to stream your music collection to the Internet.

Apologies, I tried this but listed it as WMV for some reason. Yeah, that requires firewall ports to be opened as far as I can tell, which isn't an option at work. It's also somewhat complicated (requires live account linking and such).

Looks promising. I'll have to see how the app performs. Currently Maestro utilizes an assload of memory and tends to stop working after a few days.

It might not be quite what you want, but wouldn't it be simpler to just use something like grooveshark?

From what I understand it just links up to your Windows Live account.

AudioGalaxy seems to be perfect for my needs, except for one flaw that I can't get around; it doesn't seem to want to install on my Windows Home Server (based on Windows Server 2003 R2). An error pops up every time.

My music library is in my WHS, but I run the audiogalaxy app on my daily driver and add the music folder of the server to the apps watch list

If you just want to be able to download the files from wherever you are, why not host a Secure FTP site on your WHS box? Use some off the wall port and forward it to your WHS box from your router.

If your just looking to access your music collection from your computer remotely,
Code:
http://www.rejetto.com/hfs
is a nice little freeware http server that is packed with all kinds of options and is portable not requiring an "installation". You can stream your music collection by accessing a webpage on your computer which may also be password protected with a logon. I have been running it in service mode for few years now and am always amazed at its reliability! Hope this may be of help.

I believe you should take a look at ORB:

http://new.orb.com/

It has a web interface to all your media.

Orb = Winamp Remote. It sucks, at least for me.

Used that before. Very cool app, even if you just want to throw a file up on HTTP to share with friends and family. Although not exactly a music library app.

Hmm, last time I used ORB it didn't have anything to do with Winamp. It has it's own service that ran on my desktop. And then I would log into my account on their website and be able to browse all my media and play it through their web interface in my browser.

That was awhile ago, and now I have a Synology NAS that has audiostation software that lets me play all my music through a web browser off my NAS.

So I guess maybe ORB changed.

What I meant was Winamp Remote = Orb because Winamp Remote is Orb with a skin; the functionality is the same (which IMO sucks).

check out ampache, its a bit of work, but its a really sweet setup

dump all your mp3s in it, itll play as a radio or playlists, via lan and across www if you want as well.

subsonic.org

Its the most full featured solution for streaming music (no video), Orb is pretty old by now. Tversity, Firefly media server, Twonky are some other options as well.

Ended up going with a whole new server setup at home, which I'm still configuring. I'm running Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 with Ampache, which so far kicks serious ass. The array the music is on is still building, and I'm still copying music over, otherwise I've hook you guys up with a test account. Once it's all finished I might do that. Based on my short time with it so far, I'd highly recommend it. Added music to the library crazy fast, browsing is snappy, and you actually have multiple playback options. It's pretty damn awesome.

Big thanks to all the folks with recommendations-great feedback and help!

I've played with WHS Vail, I actually still have it running on my virt environment at work. I found it to be lacking. And it seriously just couldn't handle all of the songs and media. I'd add stuff and it wouldn't sync up. Wouldn't go so far as to say it sucks, but it just wasn't heavy duty enough for me.
