so, here goes.. I work desktop support at a medical center, which has approx 1500 users. We have all the computers set up, so when you login, a script is run that automatically maps a drive to \\fileserver\username lets call the drive "H". We have it set up, so the My Documents folder points to your "H" drive, so you can go from computer to computer and have access to files in your 'My Documents' folder, as well as have the files backed up each night. The problem is, the popular media playing applications (Microsoft Media Player, and iTunes) default to My Documents\My Music\... and the drive which everybody's files are saved too is only 80 gigs. (stupid, i know, and it's currently being migrated to a multiple terrabyte server) But in the mean time, I need as much space as I can get. I want to be able to move anybody's music files off the server and onto their local machine. I want to do this without me having to call up each user "Hi this is Adam from ISD, you're violating County policy.. either move your files or I will delete them..." Or i can just delete them at will.. but that's just being mean... I need to know if there's a way to change the default folder in both itunes and WMP from the registry... then after that default folder is changed i them move the data and 'presto!' problem solved... i hope so anyways...

Suggestion: start being mean. Send out an email notifying people that they have to keep their media on their own storage, and set up a script to nuke mp3s and such every hour. I think you're going to have more problems trying to customize iTunes and WMP than just going straight to the heart of the problem. It's not your responsibility to keep track (and backups!) of everyone's media collections. Talk to the admins, and maybe they can buy an ipod for everyone who agrees to have the script run on their directory or something.

Don't be literally mean about it, though - tell people what the situation is, how to put their media files on their own computers, and then and only then move to deleting things.

^^^ what he said...

Mass email. Give them time...like a week or so to move their stuff...then one more like the day before...THEN delete....that way youre being a nice guy AND getting the job done :)

You have to remember i support 1500 people.. a fair ammount of them don't know shit about computers.. most of the time when i tell them for example 'oh, it's in your H drive' they're like " duuuuurrrr" and it's been set up like this for a long time... *sigh* it's kinda sad to see how dumb people are sometimes.

In the proposed email you could have a link that opens their H drive along with the cut/paste instructions. Something like "click here, ctrl-a, ctrl-x, close everything, click here -link for local drive-, ctrl-v".

edit: if they are breaking the company/county policy I was getting paid to enforce, I wouldnt feel quite so bad about just deleting the files.
