I have 2 of these cables that came with my Raptors. I'm talking about the blue SecureConnect ones, that are a single cable, but plug into the SATA data and SATA power. Does this mean the drives can be powered from the SATA ports? I can't find any documentation that says I don't need a separate power connector. The only power connector still available is the standard molex connector.

So, in summary, if I use the SecureConnect cables, do I need separate power, or are they powered through the SATA connection?

from what I see, there is no way for it to get power through that connector. you will still need to use molex connector.

the motherboard will not be capable of powering a harddrive. specifically because of no 12V DC power supplied from motherboard.

looks like a stupid thing for WD to have done, you use the sturdy secureconnect but then you can't use a SATA power connector if you wanted.

but I have not seen picture of full cable. just the end that plugs into harddrive and looks like its the data portion only.

if the other end splits off into two connectors, one for data into motherboard and one for power. then you don't need molex

Check the pdf on the link. This connector will withstand a force of 22 lbs but you can only use a molex to power. Now I realize that we are a fiesty lot but jeeze what the heck do I need a 22lb sata cable 4?
