WD74 Raptor Slow?

I built a new system about a month ago. Of course it seems slower and slower the more I put on my 74gb Raptor.

Anyways, I was playing wow at my friends house and hes loading crap a shit ton faster that I am. Hes on some old WD ATA 100 40gb, 1gb of pc2100 ddr shit ram, Athlon XP 2000+ , and an 8500.

I have a A64 s939 3500+ Winchester, WD74 Raptor 10krpm sata, seagate 200gb 7200 rpm sata, 1gb Mushkin PC3200 DDR Cas 2-3-2 , Sapphire X850XT.

When we are in games like WoW for instance. He loads instances a hell of a lot faster, and I have no clue why? Help?

Just for shits n giggles I did the windows drive speed test. If i remember right the WD74 Raptor did 71.1 sustained and 113 burst and my segate did 67.7 sustained and 123 burst? Are those numbers right or should I do some real benchmark on em. Help

Not really. How is his FULL 40gb WD 7200 RPM ATA 100 and the rest of his system loading crap so much faster. I load slower than quite a few people with shittier systems. I have 30gb free on my WD74....
 
Just ran SiSoftSandra bench on the Seagate 200gb 7200rpm and WD74 10krpm Raptor. Raptor got 48 and the segate got 56 wtf?

Use a real hard drive bench, like HD Tach.
Next thing I would do would be a reformat, install drivers, install the game, and see if he's still beating you (i'd be willing to bet a sizable amount that he wouldn't ;) )
 
this is not the first post I've seen like this where the raptor was running slower than it should've..

I'd download western digital's diagnostic software, and make sure the drive is ok.. There might also be a firmware upgrade to try, but I don't know about the raptors in that respect.

also, what MOBO do you have? I know on mine (MSI Neo2) there is an option for enabling DMA for SATA.. it is disabled by default, and destroy's performance.. make sure your's doesn't have an option like that too.. also, try a different cable, or sata connector on the board to make sure it's nothing wrong with that..
 
Are you both using the same type of network connection? I notice you cited instance load time in a MMO, which could be affected by server latency. If he's on cabled ethernet and you're on wireless it'd explain it somewhat.

Performance disparity aside - you filled up the drive, the computer slowed down. Un-fill the drive, performance should go back up, even if there are other factors involved.
 
See I didn't test it when it was a fresh install. I mean, didn't compare it to my friends. We are both on the same router atm. THe drive still is 45% free ;\. I have an MSI Neo4 Platinum.
 
Yea, check out the bios settings to make sure there isn't a setting for SATA DMA turned off..
 
How about ram size, that can affect loading times as well as fragmentation of the drive.
 
We both have 1 gig of ram. Even with the drive defragged its still slower. Umm there is no setting for SATA DMA in the bios. The Mobo makes windows think that the sata drives are IDE or something and there IS an IDE DMA setting and it IS enabled.
