I currently run an open bench and HDDs are just laying around. I had some trouble in Vista and now my RAID10 array is restoring.

I touched the HDDs and they were all pretty darn hot. On some of them i couldnt even hold my hand on them for a long time.

Is this normal?!

Drives can run very hot without any cooling as there isn't any way for the drive to remove the heat from itself as typically an open bench isn't very conductive to extracting heat. Even when you mount a drive in a cage within a case, the metal contact helps to transfer some heat away from the drives passively without any active cooling (ie: fan). If you run an open bench, place a 120mm fan blowing air over the drive(s). You don't need a wind tunnel, just a bit of air flow goes a long way. I personally will not run any drive without some sort of active cooling.

Ok, i placed them between CPU fan (blowing) and PSU fans (sucking)... Seems like they are much colder now.

Actually now i got 4 zalman passive hdd coolers for them, put a fan infront and a plate ontop :D damn, now they actually feel cold to the touch even at full load
