Having a couple of problems with my first new hard drive. I used the western digital data lifeguard to setup the drive as a boot drive. However the program told me i had to change jumper settings to finalise the installation, but i thought this wasn't required with SATA.

Also i find that the drive is somewhat noisier than my exisiting Seagate 40GB St340014 and it also seems to power off after some time. I've performed an extended test and everything seems to be fine.

any advice?

thanks in advance

I have 8 of these drives.

There should be NO jumper for the WD2500KS.

Remove the jumper all together and see if that solves it.

It is a very quiet drive with great performance.

Let me know, Stan

Also,

ONLY hook up one power to it. Do not hook up the SATA power and the 4 pin power at the same time. It will smoke the drive.

Even though I've run the diagnostics tool on the drive and everything seems fine I've decided to return this drive. The noise the drive makes is definitely not normal and I'm even less sure about the powering down i hear regularly.

Just wondering if it would be best to contact WD directly or to get hold of the shop I purchased it from. I've had the drive for about 2 weeks and live in the UK (there doesn't seem to be a UK WD site).

If you can exchange or return it to the place you bought it, that would be best. If you send it to WD, you will get a Refurbished drive.

THe WD2500Ks's are really quiet, if it is making an unusual noise, send it back while you still can.
