Setup: 4xWD20EVDS(2TB AV-GP) -> Sansdigital TR8M-BP -> eSATA -> HighPoint RocketRAID 2314
Problem: Will these drives work no problem in RAID5? No one seems to know whether these drives go into deep recovery mode.
Currently I have the TR8M-BP shipped off for repair due to a problem with the lower four ports. I originally had a TR5UT-B that worked in RAID5 with these drives with no issues, until I had a file corruption problem. This was most likely due to a power outage I had with no battery backup.
When I first received the TR8M-BP, the drives would randomly fall out of the array; but this was with the bottom four slots which was having problems even with JBOD.
Before I realized the tower also had problems with JBOD, I experimented with the WDTLER Utility in turning TLER on and off. I tried TLER with write at 7 seconds, and read at 7. As well as with 0 and 7, or vice versa. When I used these settings, the array would always lock up completely during either initialization or copying files to the array. I would have to restart the PC to get the array to continue functioning. I experience this behavior with both the "good" slots, and the "bad" slots in the RAID Tower.
I was hoping someone could give me their thoughts on this. Maybe someone on Earth knows whether these drives go into deep recovery mode - or can be useful for RAID. I do use these drives for their intended application: many simultaneous reads/writes for TV Recordings and HD/Bluray movies to all TVs throughout the home. It all seems like a waste/risky without redundancy though.
