Hi guys, I just bought a new HDD and 'm going to reformat my Windows soon. I'm trying to decide which HDD will server better as the main partition, WD1002FAEX or ST2000DM001?

The WD will probably have better access time but the Seagate will be probably better for transferring large files/storage? Does the edge in 2 ms access time make a lot of real world difference?

For all intents and purposes there will be no discernible real-world difference in speeds between the two. The WD is 1/2 the space and 5 times the warranty. It Depends on which is more important to you.
 
Seagate has 2 years of warranty now. However you're not sure to get the performing 2 platters one.

Windows should go on an SSD anyway.

Hmm, I know they updated in June I think to 2 year, Newegg is still showing 1 year. Seagate makes it frustratingly difficult to try and figure out a warranty. WDC at least puts warranty terms on their product pages. As to which to use for the OS, if you have a few $$$ available, buy even a 60GB SSD for the OS and install overflow apps to the WD, and back up both drives to the Seagate.

I'd say go with the WD, you could do a full backup to the seagate then. The speeds and access times will be comparable.
 
Okay thanks for the responses, I will install windows on the WD. As for SSD, I am going to start saving up from now on. :)
 
The Seagate drives are only a 1 year warranty (which is fail). I just purchased some and did a warranty check.
 
You bought "old" drives then. Those made since June have 2 years. And those made before 2012 had at least 2 years too.
