WD1001FALS for RAID

Hi:

I am planning to buy WD1001FALS drives (1TBs) for RAID on my system? Do they play well with ICH10R? Do they need TLER fixes?

WD can be hit or miss on whether TLER is supported.
Go with the desktop Hitachi's, no TLER needed for RAID, they just work.
 
Hmmm... thanks but isn't WD's reliability (esp for WD1001FALS) better than Hitachis' in general? Thoughts?
 
If you are using a parity based RAID, go with another brand that will work.
If you are using a non-parity RAID (RAID-0), it does not/should not matter which disks you buy, in that case the Caviar Black 1TB should be fine.
 
Ive had 6xWD1001FALS drive in a raid5 on a gigabyte mobo on the Intel ICH10R chipset for about 2 years now. 0 failures. No problems except that its completely full now....

Im buying an areca 1680 card, software raid still scares me. But no, Ive had 0 problems and no failures.

I can only confirm they seem to work in software raid5.
I got 8x1TB in raid5 for 2 years and they run completly smooth.
Raid reshape is done once a month and it finish without problems every time.

You reshape your RAID array once a month? What for?

Only models from 2008 on back will support TLER. Anything after will have to be an RE disk.

WIthin 24hrs one of the drives got kicked out as "bad". I removed it, checked with SMART - no issues. So if you go with "non-parity" RAID you should be OK. If you go with RAID 3/5/50/60 then yes, TLER is important.
 
Whats a raid reshape?

A RAID reshape is quite literally where you change the "shape" of the array, in terms of either the RAID level, the number of drives or both. So for example, moving from RAID 4 to RAID 5 or from RAID 5 to RAID 6 is considered to be a reshape. Expanding the capacity of the array by adding drives is also considered to be a reshape.

I find that to be a bit strange. As far as I am aware TLER issues only come to the fore when the drive hits a bad sector. If it takes too long trying to read or write a sector, the RAID controller treats the drive as faulty and kicks it.

TLER prevents this by limiting the time the drive spends doing retries. After the pre-determined time limit, the drive tells the controller it can't read the sector and controller then retrieves a copy of that sector, either from a mirror or from parity.

Obviously then, TLER issues only show up when the drive hits a bad sector. However, if the drive is hitting bad sectors, and TLER is not set, the drive should get kicked from the array regardless of the RAID level.

Unless I'm missing something?

reshaping monthly sounds weird to me and also could be dangerous if there is a bug in the reshaping algorithms.

A monthly consistency check on the other hand is recommended to prevent UREs and other forms of corruption.

Thank you. Was gonna add that but wasn't sure. :) Additionally, isn't scrubbing more effective on a weekly basis?
