Just wanted to warn other people about this: WD's warranty is localized. My drive (US warranty till 2011) is out of warranty in Europe (``out of region'').

Note that this limitation is not on their warranty policy website.

Little update on this:
I was able to get a CS rep to transfer my warranty to Europe, which was nice. I suggested to her that it'd be excellent if WD offered the same warranty (global) that Hitatchi and Seagate offer.

I got my advance RMA drive today and did a little warranty check on that: Apparently my replacement drive is covered until July of this year (2007). My old drive's warranty was until November of 2011. I must admit that this is rather disappointing considering that my drive failed withing 3 months of being put to use, 4 months of purchase.

That sure sucks. Is there a way to get the original warranty to cover the replacement? I assume that would be a standard feature of any warranty.

I guess I could e-mail the CS rep that I talked to again.

Let's say this:
I recall that IBM used to give 6 months warranty on replacement
My Samsung RMA's warranty expires when the original warranty expires
A previous WD RMA also only had 6 months warranty, but at that point it did not matter, since the original drive was going to be out of warranty pretty soon anyway.
I am not sure how long the warranty is on my Maxtor RMA drive.

A replacement drive that you receive while in warranty should be covered for 6 months OR till the end of your orginial warranty which ever is LONGER.

I would fight this with WD.

I was going to say the same thing.....No way I would accept a replacement that had less warranty than the drive I sent in.....

My only experience with WD was back in 2004..I had to RMA one of my 6 month old 36 Gig Raptors..the drive I got back came with 4.5 years of warranty remaining.....just like it should have...

I hope it works out for you. I RMAed a pair of drives to Seagate, but I don't remember what the warranty conditions were on the ones I got back.

update on this: The warranty was adjusted after they received my drive. I just got around to checking it.
