Hey,

My g/f just bough a 2TB WD Mybook Studio Edition II - it's a dual drive enclosure that has a hardware RAID0/1 capability on it.

So it comes reformatted for OS X (HFS+) and in RAID0 config. I personally don't like RAID0 because if you lose one drive you lose everything, as far as I understand it, it's only used for speed from what I can tell. She wants it for media storage, but doesn't want drive redundancy with RAID1. So I download the WD RAID manager and open it up, and with formatting it, there's only an option in the RAID manager for RAID0 and RAID1 - there's NO option, as far as I can tell, to use it as JBOD - which is what I want. Now my dual drive enclosure can use JBOD/RAID1/0, but it's Buffalo. I'd much rather her have JBOD b/c I don't want her to lose everything.

Since it's at a hardware level everything sees it as one drive - google doesn't have any answers for un-RAID'ing it as it seems to be targeted at Mac people. Anybody have any ideas how to disable the RAID? Just want JBOD :(.

Why would you want JBOD instead of RAID0? If you lose a disk, then you still lose alot of data, and have to use recovery applications to recover data.

If you use mechanical drives; you should have the data on at least 2 of those. Meaning; store your data twice; a backup is something that really protects your data.

And you can't disable the RAID as that enclosure means you talk to a virtual harddrive and you cannot directly communicate with either 2 drives anymore. At least that's what i think.
