I bought a WD Sharespace and set it up in RAID 10 planning to use it to store my photos and videos that I take. Up until now I have always kept them on a single hard drive in my machine and then have that backed up with an online service. Amazingly in the past 20 years I have only had two drives fail and both where DOA. I have never had a drive fail that I was using. To be fair I update my drives every 18-24 month and take my old drives and set them on a shelf indefinitely.
After reading some other buyers comments though I am hearing that the WD Sharespace is a very unreliable system that can't be counted on and apparently has the raid software stored on the drives. Meaning that if anything goes wrong you are screwed.
Here is my question. Am I better off using this RAID 10 Sharespace than I am using a single drive or does this cheap type of RAID 10 system offer me nothing over a single drive? I have never had a raid setup so I am a total newbie.
