newb here, first RMA

i opened up an RMA on 9/15/12, have a case # now, is there anything i include with the drive when i send in? never done this before so i'm not too sure exactly what to do or expect

Pack the drive as they proscribe and make sure you write the RMA number on at least 2 sides. Ship it via a trackable method and make sure you send it within the time range they gave you.

Does WD pay shipping on RMAs? Just curious because I bought a couple drives from Newegg, one was bad and Newegg makes you pay for the return shipping.

No they do not pay shipping. But they will let you use their account to print a shipping label. That may be cheaper than retail.

---

Since the hard drives have a serial number on them, there is no need to include anything else in the package.

If you get on live chat or call Newegg, they will usually be able to email you a prepaid shipping label.. at least for DOA items.

Thanks, I'll do that next time. I think my other drive is DOA as well; the NAS sees it and shows a green light on the bay but when I put it in a computer it's not at all recognized and holds up the boot process.

I really like(d) WD but this is pissing me off. Either they screwed up or Newegg is throwing these things around like basketballs before they package them.

WD RMA is awesomely easy, and quick.

I use their labels normally around 5-6$ (I`m in California).

After you RMA one drive you can use the box they send back for the future, I keep about 2-3 on hand so I can RMA quickly because you just pop it in, close it up, add tape and label and go. No bubble wrap or worrying about packing the drive right.

I forget turn around time since I have spares but it's not a long time, and sometimes you get lucky and get upgraded drives (newer versions) or higher capacity.

And from the reports of many, after they package (and Newegg's vision of sufficient packaging seems to be dependent on who actually does the packaging and what warehouse it comes out of) them as well :D

do they sell little Styrofoam packing enclosures for laptop hard drives? i don't have any spares, or I guess I could just use peanuts or bubble wrap

I highly recommend using their advanced exchange service. Sure they put a hold on your credit card, but they get the drive to you very quickly and you can use the packaging to send your drive back. Like others have said, if you buy the return label through them it only costs a few dollars.

I've sent back both an older 640GB and 750GB Caviar Black drive in the last four months (32MB cache versions) and both times they returned me a 1TB Caviar Black with 64MB of cache that was brand new. Awesome service.
