I recently bought a recertified hard drive from a local computer shop. I didnt really look too hard at the nomenclature for the drive, just figured it was a 160GB WD hdd and was happy at the price ($65). I got it home and started to really look at the drive and did a quick search for it on line. Come to find out the drive I bought is a WD1600SD or better know as WD RAID edition hard drives. As far as I can figure out, this HDD isnt really meant for desktop systems due to its RAID-specific time limited error recovery TLER(improves compatibility with RAID adapters and prevents drive fallout caused by extended drive error-recovery processes)

So I guess my question is,

1) Will this really impact my home desktop that much. I use my PC mostly for gaming and day to day web browsing on Win XP Home?

2) Is there anyway to disable the TLER?

3) Should I just disable the RE HDD until I get a second RE HDD and a RAID controller card?
 
You will not notice any difference performance wise when using the drive in a single configuration. It should perform similarly to any other 80gb platter 8MB cache drive from Western Digital.
 
The TLER is just how long the drives waits before responding to the controller, the non-raid editions will try to recover from an error longer than teh raid edition. This will have no impact on you though unless the drive starts to go bad, you will never notice problems.
 
from what i've read, the RE drives really dont work well as single drives. but then again, my memory has failed me before.
 
For the time being it seems to be working well. I have just Ghost Recon AW loaded on it at the moment. Am going to run with that for now, if I find no troubles I will report back and let you guys know.

And if I do run into problems, you guys will know as well. ;)
