Three heads-up items regarding WD external hard drives (MyBook/MyEssentials in particular):
1. The newer versions of both now explicitly support USB 3.0 (backwards-compatible with USB 2.0); however, due to the presence of even older external-facing USB 1.1 ports on some PCs, this two-stage update (firmware and software) is not installed by default.
2. The update for USB 3.0 support requires both a firmware update for the drives themselves, and an update for WD SmartWare (normally used by both drives for backup chores); however, this update *does* break backward compatibility with USB 1.1; therefore, installation of this update (either firmware or SmartWare) is not recommended on PCs connected via USB 1.1.
3. Reboots are *required* after both the firmware and software updates.
(I discovered this due to replacing a broken MyBook - in this case, the external enclosure-based electronics failed due to a plug-ology failure on the part of the owner; the drive itself is undamaged and is being backed up to the replacement MyBook as I type this.)
