I just bought my first green power drive yesterday. It's a 500 gig model.

Attached have a look at my HP Media Smart Server screenshot and the corresponding drive temps.

The Seagate 7200.10 is a beast when it comes to heat.

One interesting thing to note. When I inserted the WD GP drive, WHS started doing the disk balancing, and almost all drives were chugging along. The real interesting part is that the WD GP was 1 degree higher in temp than the 250 GB WD drive.

But now that activity has settled, the GP is the coolest one.

Pretty impressive if I do say so myself!

The scary thing is that I just ordered a 750GB Seagate 7200.10 via a slickdeals deal from frys for 90 bucks and free shipping. It should arrive in a couple of days time.

I'll be replacing the 250 GB drive from the storage pool.

Man, if the WD GP holds up this kind of performance then I might be replacing all future drives with the WD GP.

Performance is not that important for me since I've connected the WHS Server via 10/100

Yeah, those Seagate 7200.10s are pretty hot - and loud - in my experience, I had some WD GP drives in conjunction with a 7200.9 and a 7200.10, the Seagates were always in the 40s while the GPs managed to stay under 40C (P180 case).

Of course, there's a performance penalty with the GP drives running below 7200RPM, but for file servers, that should be fine if it's just for storage.
 
Yea, that's why I went with 1 TB GP drives for my new Thecus N5200 NAS. I didn't need cutting edge performance, and every penny I can save sending to the power company is a good thing.

Of course 1 of the 3 drives I received was DOA and is in the middle of the ZZF RMA process right now.

:confused::confused: I thought there was a thread on here a couple months back when the GP drives first hit the market that they were "marketed" as multi-rpm but in reality were just 5400 rpm drives. That they could not switch between 5400 and 7200 rpm or am I thinking of something else entirely?

Well, since there is no real way to measure the true RPM of the drive, we have to take WD word on it. Mine were listed as 7200 RPM drives at ZZF though. I will put my RMA drive in my regular system when it gets in, and do some benchmarks. If it is truly 5400 RPM, the benchmarks should show it.

It's 5400 RPM.The reason for the naming is basically that WD wants to market the drive as a "7200 RPM class drive" even though it's only 5400 RPM because the public thinks of 5400 RPM drives as oldschool and logic tells us to steer clear of oldschool products when looking for performance.
 
To be honest, the way I see it.

Have a small fast drive for boot and have a big (reliable) drive to everything else.

The GP would fit that bill.

I bought one of those recently... have you noticed that it kind of goes on and off automatically? (even with the power profile set as High Performance) I use it as a storage drive and when I play videos stored on it the image sometimes freezes (very randomly) for 1/2-1 sec, then goes on just fine. The drive seems to be working great, but those two small details have been bugging me these last few days.... I was actually going to make a post about that :p

I haven't set the jumper to disable Power Up In Standby (PUIS). Truth be told, I don't really understand how that feature makes the HDD behave...
 
The amount of logic and calibration that would require the dynamic spinup and spin down from 5400 to 7200 would be quite a feat.

Not to mention it would put strain on the motor.

What would be nice is a:

Single platter ultra high density drive @ 500GB running at 5400 RPM and having 32MB Cache and a highly optimized NCQ seek algorithm.

Soon that just may be a reality.

really the way they are marketing the drives is deceptive because they are referring to 5400-7200 as the whole class of GP drives not the individual rpm of the capacity.

I did find a link here where they claim the enterprise RE2 1 TB GP drive is 5400-7200 RPM. And here is a link to the desktop version.

I realize it is prolly not true, and here in the knowledge base is the only place where I can find where they even put a number in that box. Everywhere else they just refer to it as Intellipower for the rotational speed.

But to my knowledge, no one has yet to find one that they can say runs faster than 5400.

To me it is obvious that they are selling 5400 RPM drives and just obscuring that fact with FUD. That is fine with me, because I know that my NAS cannot dish up data faster than 1 of these drives can feed it, let alone 3 in a RAID array. If they have a 1.5 TB version out when I am ready to fill the last 2 slots in my NAS, I will still consider them.
