Since the search feature is now gone off the forum I am looking for the model of that raptor like WD enterprise drive? Last I read on this forum is performed about as good as the raptor but not as pricey. Can anyone help me out in providing me with what model, since I buddy of mine is debating a raptor of not. Thanks.

There are three ways to get a 10k rpm drive:
  1. one of the 10k rpm SCSI drives
  2. one of the 10k rpm SAS drives
  3. the WD Raptor for SATA

I am not entirely sure if this is what you were asking.

Raptors technically *are* Enterprise class drives, they always have been. The Raptor 150GB with the glass window was the one "designed" for enthusiasts, but ever since day 1 that the Raptor appeared, it's been classified as an Enterprise class (meaning designed for server purposes and not workstation usage) storage device.

Hope this helps...

There was a post a while back that there was one specific drive that costs 70-80.00 that performs about the same on par with the raptor. I am just pissed that the search feature is gone because now I cannot find the information.

I doubt it. People who claim a given drive is "as fast as a Raptor" are often not being objective, or using the drives in ways that the Raptor doesn't speed up (e.g. sequential transfers).

are perpendicular recording drives similar speed to raptors?

In what regard? They will read or write large blocks of data at much the same rate, but the time to read or write small noncontiguous blocks will be much longer on the perpendicular drive, since the seek times are longer. The Raptor does sequential I/O at about the same rate as new perpendicular drives, but the seek times are much lower.

The WD hard drive you want is the WD1500ADFD:

Enterprise edition from where the Raptor X came, it's a 10k rpm disk that WD designed for enterprise storage, but with the SATA interface.

If you actually go by the specs listed on the website it is quieter than the Raptor X. (by 10dB to be exact)

Apart from that, the specs are equal to the Raptor X.

I guess that was what you were looking for (as most people refer to the Raptor X just by Raptor), it performs as the X but it is cheaper and without fancy stuff.
