Just built new rig and am installing a fresh copy of Windows on to a brand new HDD. I think I may have done something wrong but don't understand what or how to fix it.

What happened is everything started up fine except for this one screen which said something along the lines of (I can't remember for sure):

"The SATA HDD is being detected as an IDE thingy. Yes or No?"

I ignored it the first time because I didn't understand what it meant and it just counted down and continued to the boot screen. I went to installed Windows 7, it detected the HDD and started to install. Half way through the expansion of the files there was an error and the installion was aborted.

When I next restarted my computer the same screen about the HDD came up again. I thought I knew what it meant at the time and said yes...

Because the Windows 7 DVD didn't work I have resorted to XP. The problem now is when I try to install XP it doesn't detect that there is a HDD at all.

I have reset the BIOS multiple times via taking out the battery and shorting it. Neither has brought back the screen I saw earlier.

Help would be much appreciated!
 
For XP, you'll need to load the storage controller drivers via a Floppy disk (F6 option) during installation, unless you slipstream them into an ISO and burn a disc.

When you say the Windows7 didn't work, do you mean the 1st try? or did you try again with the same error result? Installation errors are usually due to faulty RAM, HDD, or media/ODD. A quick fix may be using a single stick of RAM during installation. If you'd rather go the safe route, you can start by running memtest overnight. If that passes then you can run a drive fitness test on the HDD. And lastly, you could try another optical drive or win7 disc, if either are available. However, note the mode of your SATA controller. The first thing I'd do is switch to AHCI mode in the BIOS. ;) Let us know the results. For more help, check the troubleshooting sticky.
