WD 2500JB access denied?

My cousin has been using a computer with an asus p4pe mobo, lately he bought a WD 2500JB hdd and since then, he's been having frequent issues of not being able to access the drive (even when he partitioned it in half)

Is it the mobo problem of not being able to pick up the harddrive properly or could it be other reasons? Hopefully someone can give me a quick solution :p

This post is entirely ambiguous.
What is saying "access denied" and what is the exact error message?
 
sorry about the vagueness... it seems that windows can pick up the drive, and it shows up in windows explorer, but when he tries to "access" the partitions, it fails and he can't get in to explore or do anything about it... and many times a week he has to reformat the drive (he only use the drive as a storage... he did scandisk and defrag and such... but it didn't seem to pick anything up)

i've heard that many older bios or mobo can't pick up harddrives that are over 200gig, could that be a possible reason? will updating bios help?

sorry if i'm bad in explaining the situation, i'm pretty clueless myself :(

Download the data lifeguard diagnostic bootable CD form WD here and get your cousin to run it. If it's flakey hardware, that disc will let him know and he can RMA it.

The problem with older mobos is that they can't see more than 137GB of a drive, I don't think this would really be related to it.
 
he already RMA'ed it... it's still giving that problem (even after a quick format, he can regain access for a short while before it starts to fail again) :confused:
 
Had the same issue with a new build and one of those cheapo loyalty customer drives. Dont think ill stay loyal to WD when they send me a drive that doesnt spin up :(
 
so it's WD's problem? ....any other suggestions before I tell my cousin to trash this piece of metal? :mad:

he did, still giving the same error after it. If his windows is buggy, will that cause conflict with the hdd?
 
yes winblows could be the problem.. why not install the driv ein your pc for some time and see if u get issues. if you dont. then its obviously the machine.
 
i thought about that, but my comp uses diff mobo and such... so i was wondering if there were hardware conflicts with him... i shall tell my cousin to do a complete format with both his hdd and see how his 250 turns out... thanks for all the suggestions guys (i have a feeling i'll be posting back shortly..haha..)

thats the whole point of what paradoxblue was saying. if the drive works fine in your machine, then there is something wrong with your cousins machine.
