I bought one about a year ago and I have found it very useful. Unfortunately, my idiot friend dropped it on the floor.

Over the past few days it has gradually started to disappear (songs that were stored on the hard drive were skipping, entire folder trees disappeared, wanting to reformat the disk and then just completely disappearing).

I don't want to send it back for warranty because they might end up deleting all the data and I don't particularly want people seeing things on there. *coughs*

I thought about trying to hook it up via SATA but I can't even get the case off! Can anyone offer me any advice?

Get the data off it asap. When you send the drive back for RMA you WILL NOT get any of the data that was on it back, you will probably get a different empty drive.
 
Get all your data off of it ASAP and erase it with DBAN (if you can) before RMAing it. Like extide says, you won't get the original drive back.
 
As others have said, recover all data you can, then you can try to wipe it clean. Honestly though, I dont think those large companies even look at whats on a drive if I remember correctly. So unless you have something highly illegal stored on it ( more illegal than a crapload of MP3's, ripped movies, things such as bestiality, underage porn or federal secrets ), I wouldnt even bother tryin to wipe it.

Not saying you have any of those highly illegal things, just putting it out there.
 
If you have not over written the data it may be recoverable provided you do it while the platters can still be read. You don't actually need the look up table which is why you directories are randomly fading.

I use Restorer2000 Professional and they a newer version that supports more file formats. For 50 it is usually worth it, you just need an empty drive about 3 times as big it recover stuff you thought long gone and number all the variations, the only annoying things is figuring out which variation is a real file and which is not.

Also one other thing they will send you a new drive / refurbishment one usually not yours. If it was me I'd use this

and write the drive off after I got any data off it. But then again I know what I can get off the platters of drive that has been taken apart and exposed to dust, let alone what WDC could get off a sealed drive.
