I'm just getting started in WC and was wondering what is the best way to power your pump? Should you connect it to the 12V from the PSU or power it externally? If you power it off the PSU, how powerfull of a PSU do you need?
TIA

Well, pumps generally come in 2 different varieties. They will either run off of a 120V line (your wall socket), or a 12V DC line (your PSU). You can get relay kits to hook up to the 120V pumps to make them start up with your computer, but ultimately, they must draw their power from a wall socket.

The 12V DC pumps connect to your power supply. They generally don't take up too much power (less than 20W), so you wouldn't need some massive PSU just to accomodate your pump. :)

Hope that helps!

Well, I'm asking because I'm building a plexi case for my home theater pc. I want to have a resevior and the rad in the bottom of the case and then WC the proc and the north bridge. Currently I'm running my HTPC off a 200W shuttle PSU. I was hoping I could use this PSU to power the pump as well as my other components (1700+, 1 HD, 1 DVD, Fans, Mobo, Sblive and PVR-350). Think 200W is enough for all this stuff? Specifically, I'm looking at the Eheim 1048 with 3/8 ID tubing, a Maze3 for the CPU, some block for the cipset (haven't decided yet) and a Black Ice Xtreme Radiator w/ 120mm fan. The main goal of this case is to be quiet; I'm not really interested in extreme OCing (but always could!).

Hmm, I think it would be pretty close with those components. Also, the 1048 is not a 12V pump (I don't believe) so you wouldn't be able to run it off of your PSU anyway. You would have to plug that pump into the wall.

you're right about the Eheim 1048. I hadn't even looked at that. I guess it doesn't really matter since the box will be on 24/7. thanks for the help!

i believe that the ehiem 1046 is 12V, if that is important to you. also, if power becomes an issue you can get the shuttle psu in 250W and possibly 300W versions.

All original Eheim pumps are 120VAC or 220VAC, Eheim doesn't make 12VDC pumps.
Innovatek sells modded Eheim 1046 pumps ("HPPS") with a 220VAC convertor that run on 12VDC, and apparently also a 12VDC Eheim 1048 with a "real" 12VDC motor.

CD :)
