What do I need to WC the CPU, NB + SB?

Is this ok for the CPU - Swiftech Apogee GTX CPU Block + Swiftech Apogee GTX Copper Replacement Top
 
Bump... wow all these views and nobody know? I am shocked, usually someone would have replied by now... is this a tough question for this motherboard... cause if it is then maybe I need to stick with the Maximus Extreme.
 
Well, you are unclear about your question. However, to answer with this amount of informations, the cpu block is great as long as you get the copper top but it would be wiser to get a D-Tek Fuzion with nozzles kit (cheaper and better performance). As for the NB/SB, you need to get 2 EK NB/SB Asus 3 or Swiftect MCW30. You also need to take care of mosfets so either Enzotech BMR-C1 ramsinks (used on mine with similar layout with great success) or Thermalright HR-09 (dunno which version).
 
Or you could make a 3/8" loop and include the waterblock that comes with the Maximus Formula board......

True but only if it is the Maximus Formula SE. non-SE has no Fusion waterblock installed, just a standard heatpipe assembly.

 
Pretty sure on the Maximus the NB/SB heatpipe/heatsinks can be removed without having to take off the mosfet heatsinks, so you shouldn't have to worry about cooling them. For my Blitz Formula, I had to get a HR-09U type 2, though.
 
Appreciate the info guys and sorry about the confusion... I shoudl have been a little more clear in what I was needing...

Now I dont want to come off stupid but this is my first build/WC so I want to be sure Im not confusing myself with any of the locations of all these components... CPU I know where that is of course lol, the SB is under the black square with the G on it and then the NB ya travel up the heat pipe and there she sits... and would assume under the remaining heatsinks is where the mosfet resides. Please correct me if I am wrong...
 
On the none SE Formula can just the NB be WC or would that require me to also have to WC the SB? And if I can WC only the NB, would the SB and MOSFET benefit beings they are all tied together with heat pipes or no?
 
You can take the entire board cooling assembly off, and cool the NB with a waterblock (I suggest the MCW30)

Cool the SB with any Enzotech copper heatsink.

And cool the MOSFETS with individual tiny heatsinks, or with any heatsink designed to fit them.

Not worth it IMO... Too much fooling around for about 0 benefit. These boards, with a bit of airflow, don't really NEED to be watercooled. They're not like the 6/780i series :rolleyes:
 
Ok so basically screw the idea of WC anything but the CPU (and GPU's)


EDIT: Out of curosity though, if there is 0 benefit of WC these parts then why would Asus make the Maximus Extreme with a NB waterblock? Just for looks?
 
With P35 and X38, unless you are trying to do benching runs, it's mostly for the novelty factor. I agree with Arcygenical that if you want to watercool, just do the NB and use heatsinks on the rest but for now, I suggest you concentrate on the CPU and GPU. Do the NB down the road when the WC bug hit you :cool:

 
if you ask my asus was doing people a favor. I find it rather convenient that I will have to buy one less thing to cool my system. and I get to do it on a lower noise lvl than all air cooled.

But again... if so many seem to lean towards the fact that water cooling the NB and/or SB and mosfet isnt beneficial then how much more noise is there really going to be? Whats strikes me as odd is how everyone says less noise with water cooling but I would think (being a first timer at this) that it would create more noise considering I would have way more fans running then if I just went with all air... <shrug>
 
the benefit is that you have the heat being hit directly rather then needing more fans to push more air over your passive heat sinks. so you can have slower moving fans because they are blowing the hot air right out of the case via the radiators
 
Well I was just figuring that most people who dont water cool have those little snap on fans that come with your mobo and I cant see that making much noise... now add water cooling and say your using even just a single 120.1, that 120mm fan I would think would be making a lot more noise compared to the smaller snap on one... take that a step further and compare it to a system like Im building and we are talking 7 120mm fans just for the rads... I dont think I ever seen an aircooled system typically have THAT many fans.

That's simply incorrect. ask anyone around here a larger fan will always be Quieter than a tiny fan trying to over work.

also why are you using 7 fans for the rad alone? that doesn't sound right by itself. I have 2 120mm fans on my rad and it's more than enough and they are running at low rpm with tons of room to ramp them up until they are loud. but that's never the case I never need to turn them up.
 
Honestly 9 out 10 pictures I see people match up their rads to have the same amount of fans... 1x120.3 = 3x120mm fans. So I say 7 fans because I have 1x120.3 = 3x120mm fans and 2x120.2 = 4x120mm fans.
 
There's nothing wrong with more fans when you can run them at much slower speeds. If you're getting the right radiators, like Thermochills and MCRs, you can still get great performance with very low rpm fans that make next to no noise. On air cooling, you can either run loud fans and get similar low temperatures, or run quiet fans and get higher temperatures, generally.

Also, my Asus board's NB and SB temperatures were idling above 45C on stock settings, in 19C ambient. So there's definitely benefit for me to water cool them, which I'm working on right now.
