With the upcoming mod I am doing, I was wondering if there is any way to fit a rad into a 5.25" drive bay, that does decent cooling. Exhaust wouldn't be an issue, as I could mod the top to either intake or outtake the heat, but I wanted to know if I could fit a entire kit into a 5.25" bay and have better cooling than standard air.
My current cooler (and pretty much the only one that fits) is the Zalman CNPS8700NT

Sure, you could get a rad in there without an issue but the real problem would be trying to cram a fan in there to blow through it.

Well you'd likely have to use the top most bay, assuming you have a little depth in the top of the case to work with, b/c i seriously doubt any rad/fan combo will be thin enough to fit strictly in the bay. On the current setup I'm working on, the thickness of the rad itself is small enough to slide through a 5.5 bay, but that doesn't include the fans much less a shroud.

Also, if that's the case and the bay underneath it is going to be occupied, the rad will have to be long enough so the i/o tubes have room to come down behind the lower bay. Again, if this is the case, you should pull the air down from the top. The rad will be blowing the dissapated heat onto whatever modules under it, but that's better than pulling that modules heat up into the radiator (would be kind of pointless).

Not sure if you mean 'fitting an entire kit' in there literally or not, but doubtful. Think I saw a kit of that sort somewhere, but in all likeliness it's crap and not worth the $$.

Anyway, we could probably help you out a little better if you posted a pic of your cases innards.

Awesome advice, and yes, there is a bit of room in between the top and the top most bay, it's actually fitted for a 7" LCD, so there is a fair amount of room to work with. I'll attempt to get pics up, but how much am I looking to spend for this?
I mean, if it will get me great cooling for my up coming Phenom II build, I am already getting the DFI LP JR 790GX board specifically for overclocking, and it would be killer if I had the temps to get it to 4ghz.

I'm dumping quite a fair bit of money into this next build, and I think it is going to be good, but WC would really top it off.

I'm going to try to get pics up either tonight or tomorrow morning, since I have no work.

Money wouldn't be an object per say, but I'd like to keep a good cost/performance ratio. If another $20 would get me a much better cooling block and help me get from 3.8 to 4.0, I'm all for it, but if it's $100 for 50mhz more, it's not worth it, you know?

Anyway thanks for the help and I'll see what I can do. Until I post pics... Time to watch some 24 ;)
