WC 320gb Caviar

The 3200ks or its sibling the 2500ks would be my top recommendations for a gaming disk other than a raptor. The seek times are about average, the buffer strategy is good for games, and they're reliable disks. But buy them from ZipZoomFly - they package the drives in manufacturer-recommended foam.

 
Bought this drive, tried to install it last night and wasn't quite sure which cable to use and where / how to plug it in.

The yellow cable has a metal clip on it - this is SATA II, correct? Which is what I have..?

The red cable does not have a metal clip on it but fits anyway.

When I tried to reinstall the OS I got a bit thrown off because when creating partitions the total hard drive space only read as 130gb. I think I remember reading somewhere that SATA 150 will only read half a drive's size or something, maybe I'm making that up...

For the yellow cables, the slots on the mobo were sumbered SATA1, C, 2 & 3. For the red cables they were labled SATA1, 2, 3, & 4. Again, not sure which slot to plug it into and thanks to Gigabyte's manual being written in such poor grammar, I couldn't really make much sense of it. Any help would be appreciated.

What is the difference between the red & yellow cables?

The yellows seemed to be male connections while the reds seemed to be female. They are shaped ever so slightly differently, but they both fit on the hard drive. Which to use? and how do I know which slot to plug the other end into on the mobo?
 
So, yes, I'm stupid and I figured out what I was doing wrong.

Red cable, nice and easy.

The Hard Drive was defective (I'm assuming) but a small part of me thinks I could need a BIOS update. My motherboard says it's SATA II compatible out of the box, so I doubt it. Plus, all BIOS updates since I bought my board have nothing to do with SATA, at all. I RMA'd the drive and am hoping it truly was a defective drive. If not, then I am still doing something wrong :mad:
 
Umm, what was wrong with the drive? Only seeing 130gb is perfectly normal if you don't slipstream SP2 like suggested above.
 
Well, unless I broke something ( which I doubt ) I tried the yellow cable again (with the clip ) and it did not work. Cannot partition the drive, with either color cable.

I've tried 4 combos - none worked:

yellow cable with molex power connector
yellow cable with SATA power connector
red cable with molex power connector
red cable with SATA power connector

the only time I got it to work was the very first time I tried a yellow cable with a molex power connector. I got to the partition screen, saw 130gb available, and start the process over. Since then, nothing has worked.

Say I decide not to slipstream like mentioned above and I create a 50gb parition to install the OS on, do I lose the rest of the space, or does it come back once SP2 is installed?
 
Once SP2 is installed, the OS will recognize the rest of the space.

Where are you ordering it from? From what I hear, DOA's from NewEgg are common.

Neither Monarch or ZZF had this drive in stock.

At first I RMA'd for a refund, but with a $20 restock fee, I said screw that, I'll just take my chances until I get one that works.

I just wish I was certain I knew which drive / port to plug into lol. Damnit, no one knows what I'm talking about, red or yellow cables? lol

I'm just about certain it's the red ones.

Red ones are labelled "SATA" while the yellow ones have a metal clip and are labelled "Serial ATA"

it's strange.
