ok i upload wav files into my motorola i730 fone...and when i do...i cut the song and save that part and i convert it to wav but the problem is the file size. its 3.76MB!!!
i can upload only like 20kb files onto my fone...how can i make them smaller?
 
rip it into an mp3 would be my reccomendation.

*.wav files are huge as #@!! because of the way they are recorded... i.e. with no compression.

Edit: you could also cut off even more of the song.
 
yeah but i could only put wav files into my phone..my fone doesnt support mp3. wav and midi...but i dont want to use midi cuz it doesnt have any person singing. :p
 
best bet then is to get it small as possible.

midi's are also hard to create.
 
save the wav at a lower sample rate. doing so will greatly reduce the size of a file and considering its going to be played through a phone, the loss in quality wont be too heartbreaking.

you wont need 44.1/16bit stereo wavs on your phone.
 
this is true... and proves that i don't know everything about sound files.

If you save at a lower sample rate, it will sound worse than an MP3 which is still much smaller. There are utilities that convert mp3->wav and vice versa. You can take advantage of high sample rate MP3 compression and still save in .WAV format. In fact, there are encoders that allow you to save compressed files in .WAV in the first place.

Yeah, and when you save them to the standard 44,1/16bit stereo wav sample rate, they're going to be the same size as the wav would be if you never brought an mp3 into the situation.

mp3>wav in this situation is utterly pointless (unless you lower the wav sample rate) and results in a larger file (which is exactly what he does not want)
 
I would recommend you download YAMP. It can resample wav's, and encode/decode MP3's. And best of all, its free.


One reason for wav's being huge are their bitrate. At 44000hz, 16bits, stereo, I think mine were around 1700kbs, and i recorded 17 hours of music in one file.

you can resample down to 8,000hz or 4,000hz with 8 bits mono, it will sound much better than 32kbs mp3 file. MP3s at low bitrate sound horrible, the low bitrate WAV will just sound flat and muffled.
 
As All Reet 74, for tiny files mp3 overhead actually makes for a larger file. Besides, the guy already said he can't use mp3 files in his phone.

But yes, converting the wav into a mono, much lower bit rate file will work well, still, it's gonna have to be pretty short to be under 20K, even at low bit rate
 
That's not true...one of the many compressed .WAV formats is MPEG Layer-3 compression .WAV format. The file size does not increase when using a utility that supports it. In fact, there is no reason to even worry about the .mp3 conversion if the files are already .WAVs...You can compress the raw .WAV files directly and end up with the same results as if it was an MP3. There are many third-party utilities that will allow you to do this.
